Position Summary

We're seeking a detail-oriented Cytopreparation Technician to support the cytology laboratory at the Memphis VA Medical Center. In this role, you'll receive, prepare, and process a variety of specimens for cytologic examination, ensuring proper identification, quality preparation, and accurate documentation to support timely diagnoses for the Veterans of the Memphis area and Mid-South.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive, clock in, and verify specimens (urine, sputum, fine needle aspirates, brushings, washings, and other samples) from couriers or medical staff, ensuring specimens and request forms are properly identified and resolving any discrepancies
• Accession and record specimens in the computer system, documenting volume, density, color, and slide/smear counts
• Apply cyto-preparation techniques including centrifuging, smearing, cell block production, and slide staining and cover-slipping (automated or manual)
• Examine fluid samples for suspended tissue fragments and prepare cell blocks using various techniques
• Periodically review slide preparations microscopically to assess stain and technique quality, taking corrective action as needed
• Process gynecologic and non-gynecologic cell samples using liquid-based instrumentation, including troubleshooting, calibration, and pneumatic test runs
• Maintain the specimen accession logbook and assist with slide file organization and retrieval
• Clean equipment and glassware, monitor chemical reagents, restock consumables, and perform minor instrument troubleshooting
• Maintain an orderly, clean work area and safely handle potentially infectious material
• Conduct daily runs to collect specimens from the Main Laboratory and stock supplies for VAMC Memphis clinics and outside Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) sites

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in a cytology or histology laboratory setting
• Working knowledge of cytology specimen processing and staining techniques, including liquid-based instrumentation
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and specimen tracking
