Job summary

Christiana Care Health System is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to support the Cardiac Surgical team. Under the direction of a professional nurse, you will scrub and assist in procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and safety in the OR.

You will work with leadership to identify learning needs, participate in unit activities, and respond to crises within scope. Neonatal to geriatric patient care is covered, with mandatory preceptor workshops.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program for employees hired after 2009.
• Minimum of 2 years experience as a Surgical Technologist.
• CVOR experience is required.

Responsibilities

• Scrub on a wide range of procedures specific to unit specialties.
• Handle instruments/equipment in the OR and maintain aseptic technique.
• Provide ongoing feedback to leadership regarding preference cards and tray contents.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff and physicians.
• Attend mandatory preceptor workshop and participate in unit activities.

Job Details

PRIMARY FUNCTION

To assist the Cardiac Surgical team, under the direction of a professional nurse, in providing skilled care for any patient undergoing surgical procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Demonstrates proficient clinical skills in the scrub role.
• Demonstrates ability to scrub on a wide range of procedures, specific to the unit specialties.
• Demonstrates solid knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the handling of instruments/equipment in the OR and aseptic technique.
• Demonstrates openness to learning scrub techniques for new procedures and new instrumentation/equipment and receiving feedback concerning clinical skills.
• Actively works with leadership to identify own learning needs and seeks opportunities to meet these learning needs.
• Demonstrates an ongoing concern for safety by adhering to established safety rules and practices
• Responds appropriately to crisis situations as outlined in unit specific standards, initiates interventions within scope of responsibility and notifies circulating RN of all issues.
• Participates in the planning of care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development
• Functions as an effective team member, supporting the concept of team training.
• Actively participates in unit activities
• Demonstrates an ongoing concern for safety by adhering to established safety rules and practices
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Attend mandatory preceptor workshop.

• Provides ongoing feedback to Assistant Nurse Manager concerning preference cards and tray contents.

• Communicates effectively with patients, families, employees, and physicians, both verbally and in writing.

• Participates in annual self and peer evaluations.

• Adheres to Christianacare core values and behaviors.

• Acts as a preceptor for new employees in specific areas of expertise to improve clinical practice.

• Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS

Daily contact with patients, employees, physicians, and students. Contact at various time intervals with families, visitors, community agencies, companies as well as general public.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

Gives direction to PAT's, support service personnel.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Directly reports to Nurse Manager, ANM; receives supervision from ANM's.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program for any employee hired after 2009.
• A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
• CVOR Experience is Required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to scrub responsibilities for the care of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in the OR.

Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols.

Ability to perform specific unit tasks as assigned by the RN.

Ability to exercise judgement, tact and diplomacy.

Ability to make decisions utilizing sound judgement.

Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

Ability to utilize computer and keyboard.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

BLS certification.

Certification by an approved certification body i.e. the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) and/or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (CST) is preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to biological, chemical and environmental elements, as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.

Hourly Pay Range: $27.86 - $41.78This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
