Job summary

ChristianaCare is seeking a Surgical Technologist to assist the surgical team under the direction of a professional nurse, providing skilled care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. The role is full-time, 40 hours per week, with a day/evening schedule and varied shifts including holidays and weekends.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an approved surgical technologist program. BCLS certification is required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited, approved surgical technologist program for any employee hired after 2009.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to scrub responsibilities for the care of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in the OR.
  • Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to utilize computer and keyboard.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficient clinical skills in the scrub role.
  • Demonstrates ability to scrub on a wide range of procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities related to handling of instruments/equipment in the OR and aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates openness to learning scrub techniques for new procedures and new instrumentation/equipment and receiving feedback concerning clinical skills.
  • Actively works with leadership to identify own learning needs and seeks opportunities to meet these learning needs.
  • Provides ongoing feedback to Assistant Nurse Manager concerning preference cards and tray contents.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing concern for safety by adhering to established safety rules and practices.
  • Responds appropriately to crisis situations as outlined in unit specific standards, initiates interventions within scope and notifies circulating RN of all issues.
  • Participates in the planning of care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development.
  • Functions as an effective team member, supporting the concept of team training.
  • Actively participates in unit activities
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, employees, and physicians, both verbally and in writing.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Primary Function

To assist the surgical team, under the direction of a professional nurse, in providing skilled care for any patient undergoing surgical procedures.

Shift
  • 40hr/wk
  • Full-time - 80 hours bi-weekly
  • Schedule: Day/Evening - 0700-1930/ 0700- 1530 | 2(12hr) shifts and 2(8hr) shifts weekly
  • 1-2 Spring/Summer Holiday | 1 Fall/ Winter Holiday |
  • 1 Weekend every 4 weeks PRN 2-3 shifts per month |Trauma Call 1 per month
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates proficient clinical skills in the scrub role.

  • Demonstrates solid knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the handling of instruments/equipment in the OR and aseptic technique.

Scope, Purpose, and Frequency of Contacts

Daily contact with patients, employees, physicians, and students. Contact at various time intervals with families, visitors, community agencies, companies as well as general public.

Direction/Supervision of Others

Gives direction to PAT’s, support service personnel.

Direction/Supervision Received

Directly reports to Nurse Manager, ANM; receives supervision from ANM’s

Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

Graduate of an accredited, approved surgical technologist program for any employee hired after 2009.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements

Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to scrub responsibilities for the care of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in the OR.

Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols.

Ability to perform specific unit tasks as assigned by the RN.

Ability to exercise judgement, tact and diplomacy.

Ability to make decisions utilizing sound judgement.

Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

Ability to utilize computer and keyboard.

Special Requirements

BCLS certification.

Physical Demands

Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to biological, chemical and environmental elements, as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.

Hourly Pay Range: $25.52 - $38.28

This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
