Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky's Kentucky State Police seeks CVE Inspector I to inspect commercial vehicles for compliance with FMCSA regulations, size/weight, and highway use. Assigned to one of 13 facilities in the Commonwealth, you will perform inspections, issue citations, complete paperwork, and ensure safety on Kentucky highways.

Requires high school diploma; must be 21+, valid driver's license, background check, and pass North American Standard Inspections tests within 12 months.

• One year of automotive or powered equipment maintenance may substitute for education.

Responsibilities

• Learns statutes, regulations, policies and procedures related to commercial vehicle enforcement.
• Under supervision, inspects driver and vehicles for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations to include crawling under vehicles to physically inspect for safety defects and violations, checking for cargo securement and issuing citations when appropriate.
• Under supervision, inspects for hazardous materials cargo, determining if any violations of hazardous material regulations exist and issuing citations when appropriate.
• Under supervision, checks for size and weight compliance; issues citations when appropriate.
• Completes all necessary paperwork.
• Communicates issues appropriately through the chain of command.
• Maintains uniform and equipment in accordance with policy.

The primary role of a CVE Inspector I is to inspect commercial vehicles to determine compliance with theFederal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, size and weight compliance as well as highway use and other staterequirements for commercial vehicles that travel in Kentucky. The inspector is assigned to one of the 13facilities throughout the Commonwealth. With literally millions of trucks traversing the highways of theCommonwealth. Minimum Requirements

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: One year of experience in the maintenance or repair of automotive or powered equipment will substitute for the required education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 21 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification must successfully pass part A and part B of the North American Standard Inspections test as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at weigh facilities conducting commercial vehicle inspections.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
