Job summary

South Central College is seeking a Custodian for an unlimited full-time evening shift at the North Mankato campus. The role includes janitorial tasks, routine equipment maintenance, event setup, and ensuring a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 3:30pm–Midnight. Eligible for benefits with a shift differential of $2.25/hour for evening hours. Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in various conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily, weekly, and annual cleaning tasks to keep buildings safe and clean.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure safe operation.
• Set up classrooms, offices and events as requested.
• Remove snow and ice from entrances and sidewalks to maintain access.
• Conduct security and safety inspections to protect college property.
• Perform additional duties to support department operations and college reputation.

Salary Range: $20.87 - $25.88 per hour. For hours worked 6:00pm to midnight, employees receive a $2.25/hour shift differential in addition to their regular hourly rate.

Job Description

The Custodian will provide a variety of janitorial and general maintenance work, to include: cleaning designated areas to provide a safe environment, providing routine maintenance to equipment, assisting with snow removal from door entrances and sidewalks, assisting with classroom and special event setup, ensuring the security and safety of assigned work areas and college property as well as assisting students, employees and the public, as needed.

Responsibilities

1. Perform assigned cleaning including daily, weekly, and annual cleaning tasks in a professional manner to ensure clean and safe buildings and grounds for all students, staff and visitors
2. Perform routine maintenance to equipment to ensure they are in safe working order when needed
3. Perform classroom, office and special event setup to ensure facilities are setup as requested
4. Perform snow and ice removal to ensure clean and safe door entries and sidewalks for students, employees and the public
5. Perform security and safety duties and inspections to ensure student, college and state property is safeguarded and the college is following all regulations
6. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleach and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle, apply, and dispose of safely
• Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
• Ability to keep simple records

Physical Requirements

• Using hand tools, lifting 50 pounds, working in adverse weather conditions and working above ground level such as on ladders and scaffolding

Preferred Qualification

• Knowledge of different types of flooring and floor covering sufficient to determine proper cleaning methods, agents and equipment
• Hold and maintain a valid Minnesota Driver’s License
• Knowledge of State OSHA/Right to know regulations
• Ability to prioritize work and be flexible during frequent interruptions
• Ability to use business software such as email, word processing, internet to access document data and training

• In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (Minnesota State) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State’s Vehicle use criteria and consent to Motor Vehicle Records check
