Job summary

Arc of Onondaga is seeking a dependable Custodian to maintain clean, safe, welcoming facilities across our locations in Syracuse, NY. You will clean offices, bathrooms, dining areas, and common spaces, operate cleaning equipment, and report maintenance or safety concerns to the Custodial Supervisor.

Custodian

Arc of Onondaga is seeking dependable, hardworking individuals to join our team as Custodian. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming facilities throughout Arc locations. This position plays an important role in ensuring our buildings and premises are properly cleaned, maintained, and ready for use by the people we support, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Clean and disinfect offices, bathrooms, dining areas, clinical facilities, general-use areas, and other assigned spaces.
• Dust, mop, sweep, and vacuum floors and surfaces.
• Empty and remove trash and recycling.
• Maintain outdoor walkways, entrances, and surrounding areas.
• Move furniture and assist with room setups as needed.
• Operate cleaning equipment and use cleaning chemicals safely and appropriately.
• Maintain cleanliness and general upkeep of assigned buildings and premises.
• Follow established safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
• Report maintenance, safety, or facility concerns to the Custodial Supervisor.
• Perform other cleaning and facility-related duties as assigned.
• Work independently while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of commercial cleaning and maintenance procedures.
• Experience or skills in commercial housekeeping and maintenance for offices, bathrooms, dining areas, clinical facilities, general-use areas, outdoor walkways, and entrance areas.
• Ability to travel to and from the primary assigned worksite independently.
• Ability to maintain all job-required certifications and/or licenses.
• Ability to safely lift, move, and handle equipment, supplies, and furniture.
• Knowledge of safety requirements and proper procedures for using cleaning equipment and chemicals.
• Dependable attendance and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

This position requires a high level of physical stamina, endurance, and mobility. Work requires consistent physical exertion, including the ability to lift and handle up to 50 pounds or more for approximately 75% or more of the workday while moving materials, assisting with room setups, and operating equipment.

The Custodian will frequently be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions associated with cleaning and maintaining facilities. The position requires sustained periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and other physical manipulation.

The use of safety equipment and adherence to specific safety precautions are required.
