Job summary

Ball State University Housing is seeking a Custodian Relief and Project staff member to support on-campus facilities. The role offers competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including health plans, retirement options, and education benefits.

The position runs Friday-Tuesday during the academic year and summer hours shift to a Monday-Friday schedule. The candidate must be 18+, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and have at least one year of custodial experience.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals or environmental factors in custodial service.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding of various heights.
  • Must read and comprehend policies and procedures for safety, and perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.
  • Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
  • Must successfully pass manlift certification, if position requires it, within a reasonable period after hire.
  • Must have at least one year work experience (full time or part time).
  • You must be 18 years or older.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, renovate, and renew floor finishes using dust mops, sweeps, mops, and sealants.
  • Maintain carpeted areas with vacuuming and extraction cleaning.
  • Clean and service restrooms including fixtures and surfaces.
  • Dust, vacuum, and polish furniture and surfaces; clean windows and fixtures.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recycling materials.
  • Sweep exterior entrances and handle snow removal as needed.
  • Clean appliances and manage basic custodial tasks.
  • Lock/unlock doors and report repairs to supervisor.

About this opportunity:

Ball State University Housing has an opportunity for a Custodian Relief and Project position. This is a full-time, on-campus opportunity. The hours are Friday-Tuesday 7:30am-4:00pm during the academic year and Monday-Friday (Summer hours) 7am-3:30pm. Studebaker West Halls Relief and Project. Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:
  1. Clean, renovate, and renew resilient, wood, and hard floor surface finishes, i.e., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish and spray buff, strip, seal, wax, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of floor machines, wet/dry vacuum, scrubbers, mops, buckets, measuring cups, putty knife, cloth or sponge, eye protection, filter mask, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  2. Maintain carpet floor coverings, i.e., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of carpet vacuum, shampooer, wet/dry vacuum, extractor, putty knife, sponge or cloth, eye protection, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  3. Clean and service all areas in restrooms to include, but not limited to, lavatory, toilet, urinal, showers, bathtub areas, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of floor machine, wet/dry vacuum, portable vacuum, hand duster, bucket and wringer, mops, brushes, ladder, sponge, eye protection, gloves, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions, information.
  4. Dust, vacuum, clean and/or polish furniture and surfaces; clean facilities, fixtures, hardware and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures as required. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of dust mop, portable vacuum, hand duster, counter brush, ladder, scaffolds, screwdriver, spray bottle, bucket, sponge, cloth, eye protection, filter mask, light bulbs and tubes, various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside working conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  5. Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials and debris into designated receptacles. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, etc. Task requires the use of trash carts, bags and cans, dollies, gloves, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  6. Sweep debris, and/or sweep or shovel snow from outside entrances, landings, steps, walks, etc.; clean exterior surfaces of windows, doors, and other building fixtures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of brooms, snow shovel, plastic bags, squeegee, pole, rags, towels, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside working conditions. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  7. Clean appliances, i.e., stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, ice machines, washers, dryers, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, balance, climb, stand, walk, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of buckets, spray bottles, ladder, sponge, cloth, scrubbing pad, chemicals, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of job-related chemicals, and environmental, health and physical concerns. Requires the physical ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the mental ability to read, comprehend and follow written instructions, procedures, precautions, etc., used in connection with custodial related work, trade publications, department handbook, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend and follow written instructions, and information.
  9. Lock and unlock doors as required to perform job related duties in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, reach, stand, walk, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distance, shape, shadows, etc. Task requires the use of keys. Task exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  10. Change bed linens, make beds with clean linens as required. Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, lift, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to inspect areas, judge distances, size, shape, shadows, etc. Task requires the use of linens, carts, etc. Task exposes employee to inside environmental conditions, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  11. Arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and equipment as required; report items requiring repair to supervisor; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, etc. Task requires the use of screwdrivers, pliers, ladder, cart, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  12. Load and unload trucks and/or other vehicles, place and store deliveries, etc., inform supervisor of needed supplies. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, grasp, climb, balance, stand, walk, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to inspect areas, judge distance, shape, shadows, etc. Task requires the use of cutting devices, ladders, carts, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.
  13. Guide, assist and instruct student custodial employees. Requires all the above listed mental and physical abilities.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
