Job summary

Cumberland County Public Library is seeking a dedicated Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for customers and staff. You will perform custodial, building, and grounds tasks to keep facilities attractive and operating smoothly.

This role requires knowledge of cleaning methods, safe chemical handling, and the ability to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, and related tools. You will support events and assist with minor repairs as needed.

Qualifications

• Education/experience in housekeeping or custodial work.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and materials used in custodial work.
• Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens.
• Knowledge of safety requirements for cleaning solutions and custodial equipment.
• Skill in operating vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and other custodial tools.
• Skill in performing physical labor related to custodial and maintenance tasks.
• Ability to follow written/oral instructions and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public.
• Ability to safely operate County library vehicles per Safe Driving Policy.
• Ability to use basic computer skills to communicate via email and complete electronic timesheets.
• Ability to perform minor building repairs and general maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Cleans, dusts, and sanitizes furniture, walls, shelves, windows, mirrors, doors, and interiors.
• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and maintains floors, stairs, carpets, and other surfaces.
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.
• Operates and maintains power equipment and tools used for custodial work.
• Vacuums and shampoos carpets; performs routine carpet maintenance.
• Disposes of trash and recycling; maintains exterior receptacles.
• Inspects and maintains exteriors, sidewalks, and grounds; clears debris.
• Responds to emergencies, spills, and cleaning needs to maintain safety.
• Assists with setup/breakdown of meetings, programs, events.
• Performs minor building repairs and requests janitorial supplies as needed.

In this position, you will perform a variety of custodial, building, and grounds maintenance duties to help keep library facilities clean, attractive, and operating efficiently. • Cleans, dusts, and sanitizes furniture, walls, shelves, windows, mirrors, doors, and other interior surfaces

• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and maintains floors, stairs, carpets, and other flooring surfaces

• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, including replenishing restroom supplies and maintaining dispensers

• Operates, cleans, and maintains power equipment and hand tools used for custodial and general maintenance duties

• Vacuums and shampoos carpets and performs routine floor and carpet maintenance

• Collects, empties, and properly disposes of trash and recycling materials, including maintaining exterior waste receptacles

• Inspects and maintains building exteriors, sidewalks, stairs, and surrounding grounds by removing trash, debris, and other materials

• Responds promptly to emergencies, accidental spills, and other cleaning needs to help maintain a safe environment

• Assists with the setup and breakdown of meetings, programs, and special events at the library

• Performs minor building maintenance and repairs, including basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks, and monitors and requests janitorial supplies as needed

Education and/or experience in housekeeping and/or custodial work that is directly related to job.

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and materials used in custodial work

• Knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens

• Knowledge of safety requirements and procedures related to cleaning solutions, chemicals, and custodial equipment

• Skill in safely and effectively operating and maintaining vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and other custodial tools and equipment

• Skill in performing physical labor associated with custodial, cleaning, and general maintenance duties

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and established procedures

• Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with co-workers, library staff, and the public

• Ability to safely operate County library vehicles ranging from mid-size cars to a ¾-ton courier truck in accordance with the County’s Safe Driving Policy

• Ability to use basic computer skills to communicate via email and complete electronic timesheets

• Ability to perform minor building repairs and general maintenance tasks

Conditions of Employment:

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
