Job summary

Hy-Vee Inc. is seeking a Custodian to maintain clean, safe, and welcoming store environments. Responsibilities include cleaning inside and out, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a positive atmosphere for customers and staff.

The role involves greeting customers, performing various cleaning tasks, updating dispensers and lighting, and assisting in other store areas as needed. Night and weekend shifts are required, with full training provided.

Qualifications

• Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
• Work effectively as part of a team to keep the store clean and running smoothly.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers with a smile and provide prompt, friendly service.
• Maintain total store cleanliness inside and out, including cleaning tasks and maintenance.
• Change ceiling lights and install or replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed.
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers; notify supervisors of issues.
• Empty garbage and crush cardboard throughout your shift.
• Unclog drains as needed and perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Clean cooling systems and filters for the store.
• Order cleaning products as needed and audit invoices for correctness.
• Conduct quarterly inventory on products for costs and amounts used.
• Do price checks, return carts from the parking lot, and sack for customers.
• Assist in other areas and take on special projects as assigned.
• Adhere to Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
• Report to work when scheduled and on time.

What You'll Do

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every interaction a positive one
• Maintain total store cleanliness and appearance inside and out, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, power washing, scrubbing, dusting, shampooing carpets, and sanitizing
• Change ceiling lights and install or replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers and notify supervisors of any issues
• Empty garbage and crush cardboard throughout your shift
• Unclog drains as needed and perform routine equipment maintenance

Education and Experience

No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas. Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation. Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment. Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards. Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties.

Working Environment

This role is performed throughout the store and surrounding exterior areas. You will have regular exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dampness, dirt, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
