Job summary

Hy-Vee is seeking a Custodian to keep store interior and exterior areas clean, safe, and welcoming for shoppers and staff. You will perform a wide range of cleaning duties, operate and maintain equipment, and help with general store upkeep.

No formal education or prior experience is required; comprehensive training will be provided. This hourly role includes variable shifts and potential advancement within store operations.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction positive.
• Maintain store cleanliness and appearance inside and out, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, power washing, scrubbing, dusting, shampooing carpets, and sanitizing.
• Change ceiling lights and install/replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed.
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers and notify supervisors of issues.
• Empty garbage and crush cardboard throughout your shift.
• Unclog drains as needed and perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Clean cooling systems and filters for the store.
• Order cleaning products and audit invoices for correctness.
• Conduct quarterly inventory on products for costs and amounts used.
• Do price checks, return carts from the parking lot, and sack for customers as needed.
• Assist in other areas of the store and take on special projects as assigned.
• Adhere to Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
• Report to work on schedule and on time.

What You'll Do

Education and Experience

No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas


• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation


• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment


• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards


• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is performed throughout the store and surrounding exterior areas. You will have regular exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dampness, dirt, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $15.00 to $18.75 depending on experience.
