Job summary

Hy-Vee Inc. is hiring a Custodian to keep store spaces clean, safe, and welcoming for customers and staff. You'll perform cleaning, maintenance, and basic repairs inside and outside the store, and support department needs as assigned.

No education required; we provide training. The job is an hourly role in Springfield, IL with starting pay $15.00–$18.75 per hour, and eligibility for benefits; pre-employment drug screen applies.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile and making interactions positive
• Maintain total store cleanliness and appearance inside and out, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, and sanitizing
• Change ceiling lights and install or replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers and notify supervisors of any issues
• Empty garbage and crush cardboard throughout your shift
• Unclog drains as needed and perform routine equipment maintenance
• Clean cooling systems and filters for the store
• Order cleaning products as needed and audit invoices for correctness where applicable
• Conduct quarterly inventory on products for costs and amounts used
• Do price checks, return carts from the parking lot, and sack for customers as needed
• Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned
• Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies and individual store guidelines
• Report to work when scheduled and on time

What You'll Do

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every interaction a positive one
• Maintain total store cleanliness and appearance inside and out, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, power washing, scrubbing, dusting, shampooing carpets, and sanitizing
• Change ceiling lights and install or replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers and notify supervisors of any issues

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Service Managers

Education and Experience

No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed.

Physical Requirements

Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Work Environment

This role is performed throughout the store and surrounding exterior areas. You will have regular exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dampness, dirt, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

Compensation

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $15.00 to $18.75 depending on experience.
