Job summary

Texas Health and Human Services Commission is seeking a Custodian II for the Austin State Hospital facility. The role supports housekeeping services in a health care setting, with day shift, full-time, non-exempt status.

Responsibilities include custodial tasks, equipment operation, sanitation, and inventory management, with opportunities to participate in safety and disaster response procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum six months’ custodial or environmental services experience.
• Preferred: healthcare or hospital/ nursing home environment experience.
• Must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen and registry checks, policy immunizations.

Position Details

Job Title: Custodian II (Housekeeping Services, Health and Human Services Commission). Posting Number: 18849. Shift: Day. Full-Time, Non-Exempt. Salary: $2,694.70 – $3,269.08 per month. Facility: Austin State Hospital, 4110 Guadalupe, Austin, TX.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform moderately complex custodial work including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows and light fixtures.
• Operate floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors.
• Maintain and sanitize floors, restrooms, nurses’ stations, and other areas in accordance with established procedures and safety measures.
• Restock supplies and maintain assigned custodial equipment in good working order.
• Assist in conducting inspections for cleanliness and needed repairs, and perform minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
• Assist in maintaining outdoors areas, clearing trash and debris.
• Cooperate with other custodians and provide support for disaster response, recovery or COOP activation when required.
• Complete documentation accurately and maintain inventory and equipment records.

Essential Job Functions

• Attend work on a regular basis and may work rotating schedules, extended shifts or overtime per agency leave policy.
• Ensure proper sanitization and disinfection in accordance with training.
• Inspect assigned buildings and areas for cleanliness, completed work, and needed minor repairs, and perform minor maintenance.
• Protect confidential information, complete documentation timely.
• Help patients maintain optimal health and provide a safe environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
• Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
• Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
• Skill in using custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals.
• Skill in using and maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
• Ability to stay on task and complete work timely.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
• Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients.
• Ability to work irregular hours.

Qualifications

Minimum of six months’ work experience in custodial or environmental services in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar environment.

Preferred: Experience in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or similar residential equivalent.

Other Requirements

• Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen and registry checks including the CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, LEIE.
• Males 18-25 must register with Selective Service.
• All applicants must be at least 18 years of age; certain locations require 21 years.
• Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and vaccination requirements.
