Job summary

Department Information

Our Custodial Staff members are an essential part of Adams State University’s success. Maintaining the cleanliness of our facilities is crucial to providing a safe, comfortable, fully functional, and aesthetically pleasing campus environment that is conducive to teaching, learning, living, and creating the best possible experience for our students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus .

Description Of Job

Custodial positions at Adams State University provide custodial support in various assigned areas on campus. The custodial staff is responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of nearly all interior spaces on the Adams State Campus

Specific duties include but not limited to: cleaning and servicing buildings, by sanitizing, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, removal of trash/debris and recyclable materials. Moving furniture, cleaning kitchens, bathrooms/showers and locker rooms, sinks, walls, floors, windows, closets, replacing light bulbs, stripping and waxing floors, carpet cleaning, burnishing floors, keeping entree ways clean and free snow and debris; and performing set-ups for special functions, supervising student and community service help, and other duties as required.

Other Duties May Include
Floor and Carpet:

Perform floor-care cleaning duties: Sweeping, mopping, spray buffing floors, burnish floors, refinish wood, concrete and vinyl composite floors (by removing floor finish sanding or stripping, then sealing and waxing) vacuum and spot clean carpet, straighten and move furniture, shampoo upholstered furniture, carpet extraction and I-capulation.

Outside Building, Equipment Maintenance

Minor repair/service of building and custodial equipment, including; replacing light bulbs, moving furniture, submitting work requests, tightening screws, servicing vacuum, auto-scrubbers, replacing cleaning pads etc

Outside duties including, windows, picking up trash and debris around building’s perimeter and removing snow from entrances, handicap ramp and stairs.

Safety And Chemicals

Understanding Safety Data Sheets; proper use of cleaning chemicals, for example, water, natural soaps, synthetic detergents/surfactants, solvents, acid, alkaline cleaners, etc. The use of these chemicals requires proper safety precautions and knowledge of various chemical hazards. (SDS)

Attend training meetings on safety, cleaning procedures, and equipment and product use.

Special Events And Set-ups

Work related to setting up/taking down for special events, for example, moving tables and chairs for registration, graduation, homecoming, New Student Orientation, campus Bbq’s or other events as contracted; pulling bleachers in/out for athletic events, moving offices, portable stage equipment, tents, banquets, and other conferences items.

Minimum Qualifications:

Six (6) months of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

A successful candidate will demonstrate responsible professional conduct at all times; will be punctual and observe scheduled work hours; will not abuse leave and will follow call-in procedures. The successful candidate will also follow safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment, when required.

Successful Applicants Must

Read and understand the labels on cleaning materials, warning signs, Safety Data Sheets

Effectively communicate with campus faculty and staff.

Be willing to work different shifts (day and/or night), including weekends and Holidays.

In this position you will be required to exert or lift in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. for force constantly. It also requires constant or frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, handling, pushing, pulling and reaching.

In this position you will be required to withstand exposure to dust and fumes associated with cleaning agents and custodial work.

In this position you will be required to withstand exposure to adverse weather while performing snow removal duties in front of building entry/exit ways as needed.

Note:

Although this position is non-exempt for FLSA, it is a condition of employment at Adams State University to agree to receive compensation time in lieu of overtime pay.

*Years of experience will be expressed in terms of full-time equivalent service with full-time workload equal to one (1) Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) year. No more that 1.00 FTE year may be credited in any twelve (12) month period. Positions working 40 hours or less per week will be pro-rated (30 hrs/wk=0.75 FTE=9 mos credit; 20 hrs/wk=0.5 FTE=6 mos credit; 10 hrs/wk=0.25 FTE= 3 mos credit.)*
