Job summary

The J is seeking a Custodian in St. Louis, MO to maintain cleanliness, organize spaces, and assist with laundry and daily tasks across our facilities. You will collaborate with staff and vendors to ensure high service standards and meet safety guidelines.

Responsibilities include cleaning floors, laundry duties, stocking supplies, and supporting kitchen transport as needed. Flexible schedule, able to work weekends/evenings, and commitment to our inclusive mission are required.

Qualifications

• Grade School graduation is required.
• HS diploma or GED preferred.
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment with interruptions.
• Prior related cleaning experience preferred.
• Basic math/computational ability is needed.
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety is a plus.
• Attention to detail with strong customer service.
• Weekend/evening availability required.
• Willingness to set up/tear down for events as needed.

Summary

The Custodian is dedicated to fulfilling the Jewish Community Center’s (the J’s) mission of enriching lives, building community, promoting inclusivity, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences. The Custodian proactively collaborates across departments to provide excellent customer service to our staff, members, vendors, and rental clients through routine cleaning, room set up, laundry duties, and upkeep of the buildings and grounds.

Responsibilities

• Must be able to work independently and well with others.
• Launder, fold and restock towels.
• Mop, sweep and scrub floors and other surfaces as needed.
• Clean and dust furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and related furnishings.
• Ongoing cleaning and servicing of restrooms and locker rooms; frequent restocking of consumables, towels, and toiletries.
• Collect waste paper and recyclables.
• Report items that require repair.
• Safely operate necessary equipment (i.e., clothes washer, clothes dryer, elevator, etc.).
• Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout work area.
• Assist the kitchen with transport of food when needed.
• Transport items throughout the J as needed (i.e., meals, packages, mail, etc.).
• Follow and abide by all J rules and policies.
• Attend J and departmental meetings as required.
• Report any issue that you cannot resolve but requires attention.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical Demands

• Must pass pre‑employment physical.
• Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking, and must be able to spend the majority of shift walking, twisting, bending, pushing, stooping, and pulling.
• Must be able to stand and exert well‑paced mobility.
• Requires the ability to communicate effectively.
• Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching.
• Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects not to exceed 50+ lbs.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
• Most tasks are performed indoors with moderate temperature controlled by building systems; laundry staff must be able to work in extreme temperatures found in laundry rooms (+80°F), possibly for one hour or more.

Qualifications

• Able to volunteer to work set up and tear down for events, may require adjusting hours or time outside of normal business hours.
