Job summary

The Custodian at Jewish Community Center on the Hudson Inc. keeps our Village of Tarrytown facilities clean, safe, and welcoming for members, staff, and guests.

You will perform floor care, clean bathrooms and kitchens, set up rooms for classes and events, restock supplies, and help with light maintenance and exterior cleaning as needed. • Excellent, demonstrated experience with room setups, cleaning, and general custodial duties in an institutional setting, preferably a school setting or house of worship.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills. Flexibility with changing needs/demands in a busy environment with membership contact.
• Punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with schedule.
• Good customer service skills and positive energy.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions and set-ups.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with the team, taking instruction/guidance and offering assistance willingly.
• Ability to work independently to support the group effort.
• Strong knowledge of cleaning products and best practices for using products and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, vacuum, and mop flooring and stairs.
• Clean and sanitize bathrooms and office areas.
• Clean sinks, countertops, microwaves, and refrigerators in kitchen.
• Restock supplies in bathrooms, break rooms and common areas.
• Empty trash cans and replace liners; clean receptacles as necessary.
• Setup rooms for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc., and reset to another plan after use.
• Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and finish to hard surface floors as directed.
• Lock and unlock building and secure it when not in use.
• Report unlocked doors/windows and any unauthorized occupants; turn off lights.
• Remove snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs within sixteen feet of buildings.
• Wash interior and exterior windows; attend to emergencies when necessary.
• Dust and clean office desks and furniture; clean windowsills and windows.
• Perform general maintenance of facility and grounds, including periodic painting and minor repairs.
• Other routine maintenance duties as assigned.

Job description

The Custodian is a key member of our Facilities team who will help provide a a safe and clean environment inside and outside of our Community Center.

Daily job responsibilities/functions to include, but not limited to:

• Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping of flooring and stairs.
• Clean and sanitize bathrooms and office areas.
• Clean sinks, counter tops, microwaves, and refrigerators in kitchen.
• Restock supplies in bathrooms, break rooms and common areas.
• Empty all trash cans and replace liners, clean receptacles as necessary.
• Setup rooms for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc. and reset accurately to another plan following room use.
• Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors as directed
• Lock and unlock building: secure building when facilities are not in use.
• Check for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
• Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within sixteen feet of buildings using shovels.
• Wash accessible interior and exterior windows.
• Attend to emergencies when necessary.
• Dusting and cleaning office desks and furniture.
• Cleaning windowsills and windows.
• General maintenance of facility and grounds, including periodic painting and minor repairs.
• Other routine maintenance duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent, demonstrated experience with room set ups, cleaning, and general custodial duties in an institutional setting, preferably a school setting or house of worship.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills. Absolutely essential isa demonstrated attitude of flexibility with changing needs/demands within the context of the job and a bright and cheerful disposition, since there is much contact with our membership.
• Punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with schedule.

• The work requires routine walking, standing, bending, carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds
• Occasional work on ladders.
• Moving items over fifty pounds utilizing a team lift
• Must be authorized to work in the US.
• Must have two years of recent maintenance experience in residential/commercial buildings, establishments or institutions. Must be willing to submit to background check
