Job summary

Ho-Ho-Kus Public School District is hiring custodians for day and night shifts. Custodians are responsible for cleaning, upkeep, and safe operation of school facilities, working as part of a collaborative team to support daily school life and events.

Shifts include Day 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. and Night 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package and salary per the negotiated agreement; Day shift starts at $46,624 and Night shift at $48,424 (Step 1).

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required or preferred.
• Prior custodial, maintenance, or building services experience preferred.
• Lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, and common areas.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs; report larger issues.
• Set up and break down furniture for events.
• Monitor building systems, including heating and boiler operations.
• Maintain grounds, including snow removal and cleanup.
• Follow safety procedures and store cleaning chemicals properly.
• Secure the building at close (night shift) and prepare for next day (day shift).
• Respond to custodial needs in a courteous and timely manner.

Position Summary

Custodians are responsible for the cleaning, upkeep, and safe operation of the school building and grounds. Working as part of a collaborative team, custodians play a vital role in supporting the daily life of the school and ensuring that facilities are ready for students, staff, and community events.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, and common areas according to established schedules and standards
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, reporting larger issues to the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds
• Set up and break down furniture and equipment for school and community events
• Monitor building systems, including heating and boiler operations, as directed
• Maintain grounds, including seasonal tasks such as snow removal, salting, and leaf cleanup
• Follow all safety procedures and properly handle and store cleaning chemicals in accordance with Right-to-Know and PEOSH requirements
• Secure the building at the close of the day, including locking doors and checking windows and alarm systems (night shift)
• Open the building and prepare facilities for the start of the school day (day shift)
• Respond to custodial needs throughout the day in a courteous and timely manner
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Prior custodial, maintenance, or building services experience preferred
• Trade work experience preferred, such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, or HVAC
• New Jersey Black Seal Low Pressure Boiler License preferred
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team
• Courteous and professional demeanor when working in a school environment with students, staff, and families
• Valid driver's license preferred

Work Schedule

These are 12-month positions. Shift hours are as follows:

• Day Shift: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Night Shift: 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Occasional overtime, including evenings, weekends, and snow emergencies, may be required.

Employment is contingent upon Board of Education approval, satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check, and compliance with all applicable New Jersey statutes, including the New Jersey First Act residency requirements.
