Job summary

Brooklyn Community Services in Brooklyn, NY is seeking a Custodian to maintain the Farragut building at 228 York Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. The role focuses on keeping interiors and exteriors clean and safe for staff, residents, and visitors.

This full-time position requires availability 2:00pm–10:00pm on weekdays and weekends as program needs. The hourly pay is $17.00, with benefits; candidates should have experience in floor care, minor repairs, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide daily cleaning of facility and grounds, including snow and ice removal.
• Maintain exterior of building free from graffiti and unsightly conditions.
• Perform routine maintenance inspections and minor repairs.
• Inspect and service A/C and heating units periodically.
• Strip and wax floors; replace light bulbs and fixtures.
• Remove debris and manage trash; stock supplies as needed.
• Secure facilities after hours and report major damages.
• Assist with deliveries, pickups, and other duties as directed.

Position Summary The custodial worker is responsible for maintaining the interior and exterior of the building, ensuring a safe, clean and pleasant environment for all staff, residents and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily cleaning of the facility and facility grounds, including snow and ice removal.
• Maintain the exterior of the building free from graffiti and other conditions that are unsightly.
• Perform routine maintenance inspections.
• Conduct routine inspections and perform seasonal cleaning and repairs of A/C and heating units.
• Strip and wax floors.
• Clean and replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures.
• Remove debris/leaves from the roof to unclog drains and prevent building leaks.
• Clean all bathrooms including fixtures, urinals, toilets, wash halls and tiles.
• Remove, Recycle, garbage and trash.
• Keep inventory of distributed sanitary supplies as needed.
• Unpack and stock supplies.
• Inform Supervisor of needed sanitary and cleaning supplies.
• Repair equipment and furniture as needed.
• Assemble furniture, equipment and other miscellaneous items.
• Assist with deliveries, pick-ups and drop-offs as needed.
• Perform maintenance and minor repairs (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks etc.).
• Report major damages and oversee repairs.
• Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm.
• Perform other related duties as directed by a program/site director, facilities coordinator, Director of Facilities, or maintenance supervisor.

Qualifications/Skills

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Ability to interact with the client population.
• Ability to effectively work in a team environment.
• MUST be able to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.
• MUST be able to ascend/descend up to 8 flights of stairs.
• MUST be able to work with hazardous substances with proper PPE (personal protective equipment).
• DRIVERS LICENSE with a clean driving record A PLUS!
• Must undergo pre-employment screenings such as the Criminal Background Check required by OMH
