Position Summary:

The Washington Center for the Performing Arts is seeking a part-time Custodian & Maintenance Coordinator. This position works directly with the Lead Custodian and Facilities Coordinator to create a healthy atmosphere, an essential role in maintaining the building and venue, while directly supporting the organization’s mission. This position reports to the Event Services Director.

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the building and surroundings to industry and venue standards.
  • Perform various cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, and washing.
  • Pick up litter in the venue and on the grounds.
  • Apply cleaning chemicals safely and follow safety measures for equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Perform minor repairs, maintenance, and painting as authorized.
  • Sets and strikes tables, chairs, and furniture used in events.

Work Safe, Safety & Security:

  • Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
  • Secures venue(s) to always ensure proper building security.
  • Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain relationships with vendors and stakeholders to order and prepare maintenance-related items.
  • Maintain communication with relevant managers and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.

Strong attention to detail and refined interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates must effectively manage multiple deadlines with consistent follow-through and maintain constructive relationships with staff, vendors, contractors, and public entities. The role requires the capacity to perform accurately in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities. Initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision are critical to success.

Educational Requirement:

A high school or GED is preferred but not required.

Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position:

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the employee must meet certain physical demands. Reasonable accommodation is available for individuals with disabilities.
  • The employee will frequently bend, sit, move about, hear, and speak. Noise levels may be high when operating power equipment. Must be able to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.
  • Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically, and over the phone. Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.
  • The job requires the use of ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lifts. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.
  • The employee is required to properly use safety equipment to prevent injury to self or others.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during their duties.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a non-exempt, part-time (15 - 20 hours per week position. The hours for this position are primarily overnight and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $17.13 to $19.00 per hour. This position qualifies for the Center's SIMPLE IRA plan and matches 3% employer contribution as of January 1 each year upon meeting the minimum earnings requirement of $5,000 per year.

Required Certifications:Must be First Aid, CPR and defibrillator certified within one month of hire.
