Job summary

Vaakawi is seeking a Custodian to maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment for occupants. Responsibilities include routine maintenance, building upkeep, event support, and securing the facility.

The role requires basic mechanical and maintenance skills, the ability to lift 50+ lbs, and reliable, independent work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• General Maintenance: minor repairs, light plumbing, painting.
• Facility Cleaning: sweep, mop, vacuum, sanitize restrooms and stock supplies.
• Event Support: set up/tear down for meetings and events.
• Security & Access: lock/unlock building, secure doors/windows, manage alarms.
• Groundskeeping: keep entryways clear, manage debris and ice.
• Inventory Control: track supplies and reorder when needed.

The Custodian

Job Description

The Custodian serves as the primary caretaker of the facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and functional environment for all occupants. Beyond standard cleaning duties, this role involves routine building maintenance, groundskeeping, and assisting with facility operations, including event setup and building security. The Custodian acts as the first line of defense in identifying and resolving facility issues.

The Custodian will perform a variety of custodial duties for Vaakawi. Such responsibilities shall be in accordance with established standards, instructions, and procedures of Vaakawi.

Job Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

• General Maintenance: Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, painting, and fixing simple plumbing or carpentry issues.
• Facility Cleaning: Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum hallways, stairs, and office spaces; sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies.
• Event Support: Move furniture, set up chairs and tables for special events or meetings, and break down setups afterward.
• Security & Access: Unlock and lock the building at scheduled times; ensure windows and doors are secure; activate/deactivate alarm systems.
• Groundskeeping: Keep exterior entryways clear of debris, snow or ice; maintain clear walkways and empty outdoor trash bins.
• Inventory Control: Monitor cleaning and maintenance supplies and submit orders for replenishment when necessary.

Key Skills & Qualifications

• Mechanical Aptitude: Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry to perform minor building repairs.
• Physical Capability: Ability to lift heavy furniture (50+ lbs), climb ladders, and operate heavy cleaning machinery.
• Reliability & Trustworthiness: Often holds keys to sensitive areas; must work independently with minimal supervision.
• Problem Solving: Ability to identify facility hazards quickly and determine the correct course of action.
