Summary

Crystal Lake School District 47 currently has an opening for a custodian. The Custodian provides custodial services at assigned site(s); ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations and assisting in preparing facilities for activities and events.

Essential Functions
  1. Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, corridors, carpets, windows, walls, stage, locker rooms, graffiti removal, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  2. Prepares site for daily operations (e.g., open doors, gates, remove snow from walkways) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
  3. Arranges furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and events.
  4. Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops) to ensure availability of necessary items.
  5. Distributes supplies and equipment (e.g., soap, towels, toilet paper, furniture) to appropriate parties.
  6. Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment and fixtures (e.g., vacuum belts, faucets, toilets, light fixtures) for proper functioning.
  7. Performs summer maintenance (e.g., floor stripping/waxing, furniture moving, painting) to facilitate summer projects.
  8. Attends meetings, training, and workshops to stay informed on job functions.
  9. Responds to safety or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) to take appropriate action or notify personnel.
  10. Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights) to minimize property damage and liability.
  11. Supports district maintenance staff in site activities/projects.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient work unit functioning.
Skills
  • Ability to perform multiple non-technical tasks and upgrade skills as needed.
  • Operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Adherence to safety practices (e.g., chemical use, PPE).
Knowledge
  • Clear communication and understanding of written and oral instructions.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods, safety practices, and material preservation.
Abilities
  • Work within a schedule, organize activities, and handle data and equipment.
  • Work effectively with diverse individuals and teams.
  • Problem-solving to identify issues and plan actions.
  • Adapt to changing priorities, meet deadlines, and work with interruptions.
Responsibility

Work under supervision using standardized routines; may require resources from other units.

Work Environment

Physical demands include lifting (up to 75 lbs.), carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine motor skills. The work is performed under minimal temperature variations with some exposure to risks.
