Persons working in this position are responsible for maintaining both the public and restricted exterior and interior areas of the Kenner Police Complex, Training Center, Jail Complex and prison cells, in a clean and orderly condition. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This is descriptive, not restrictive as to all tasks included in the position.):
ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:
While performing the duties of Custodian, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions. Police Department Custodians are exposed on a regular basis to areas housing known criminals and an inmate population. Some of the inmate population may suffer from psychological or behavioral irregularities and may carry communicable diseases. Although procedures attempt to limit the risk of physical contact with inmates, it is possible that the employee may be exposed to biological hazards such as vomit, blood, urine, feces, or saliva. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Workdays consist of 7 hours. This period is from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., which includes a half-hour lunch period and two 15-minute breaks, as approved by the Supervisor, but, work hours can vary from day to day.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
These physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and perform some tasks while on a ladder; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 80 pounds or more. The Police Department Custodian may be required to don bio-hazard face shield, mask, or full body suit while performing non-routine tasks in and around the Jail and inmates. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from a Supervisor. Must be able to interpret written policy and administrative procedure. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
Must be able to work compatibly in-group settings, as well as alone. Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvements. Must be able to work in and around, and avoid fraternization with inmates.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The ability to engage in light to moderate physical activities. Valid Louisiana driver's license with a good driving record. High school diploma or GED.
