Job summary

The University of New Mexico Gallup Branch is seeking a Custodian to join our Facilities Management team, performing daily cleaning and upkeep of campus facilities in Gallup, NM.

Duties include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, restroom sanitation, trash disposal, equipment care, and light maintenance; this role may require shift work, weekends, and on‑call hours.

Qualifications

• Minimum education: less than high school; no prior experience required.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• Empties trash receptacles and disposes trash properly.
• Unlocks doors and ensures doors are locked after cleaning areas.

• Promotes safety and environmental practices.
• Assists in on‑job training of new staff.
• Performs cleaning based on seasonal/project requirements.
• May provide vendors access to areas and report issues to supervisor.
• Assists with snow removal and minor maintenance as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

PLEASE NOTE: This position is for the UNM Gallup Branch, located in Gallup, NM, approximately 138 miles west of Albuquerque, NM.

The University of New Mexico Gallup Branch Facilities Management Department is seeking a Custodian to join our team. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

• Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
• Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
• Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Assists in on‑job training of new staff on routine procedures.
• Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
• May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions. May report issues with vendors to supervisor.
• May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
• Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.

The position requires shift work, may work on‑call, overtime and weekends as required. The position requires physical activity and exposure to indoor and outdoor elements including hazardous materials.

Conditions of Employment

• Must pass a pre‑employment criminal background check.
• If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
• Successful candidate must submit to post‑offer, pre‑employment physical examination and medical history check.
• Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED
• Demonstrated ability to read, understand, enforce and follow safety procedures
• One or two years custodial work experience
• Valid NM driver's license with ability to operate University vehicles and equipment as necessary.
