Job summary

The Salvation Army in Chambersburg is seeking a dedicated Custodian to join our team as a part-time plus role. You will ensure the Corps and Thrift Store facilities are clean and functional daily, performing custodial duties and routine maintenance with commercial equipment.

Responsibilities include setting up for events, maintaining cleaning schedules, coordinating with the Facilities & Outreach Manager, and assisting with building repairs, snow removal, and vehicle upkeep as needed.

Qualifications

• Able to use hand tools and small power tools as needed.
• Able to operate cleaning and maintenance equipment.
• Must treat all people with compassion and respect.
• Must be able to work independently.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills and appropriate intervention skills within The Salvation Army required.
• Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to drive for The Salvation Army.
• Background checks and driving/background clearances as required by PA law.

• Set up and tear down for special events / programs at the direction of the Facilities & Outreach Manager.

• Maintain cleanliness of building and property according to the maintenance and cleaning schedule.
• Monitor and keep all rest rooms stocked with items needed for daily use.
• Weekly set up and changeover of rooms as required for program activities during the week.
• Keep outside of buildings properly maintained, including daily trash pickup.
• Cut grass weekly and perform snow removal as needed.
• Performs building repairs and maintenance as requested by the Manager.
• Assist with driving The Salvation Army’s vehicles for supplies, equipment or service.
• Assist in Christmas kettle efforts as needed.

Schedule: Part-time Plus, Monday-Friday, Schedule May Vary

Reporting Relationship: Facilities and Outreach Manager

Salary and Grade: $12.50 per hour; 72 Non-Exempt

Responsibilities

Position Overview: The Custodian will ensure that the Corps and Thrift Store facilities are clean to the highest standards and are able to function without interruption daily. Will perform custodial and regular maintenance of both Salvation Army properties.

Description of Position:

• Represent The Salvation Army in a manner that brings glory to God.
• Assist in every way requested to carry out the spiritual and total mission of The Chambersburg Corps of The Salvation Army in terms of community needs and our ministry to the people of our community.
• Set up and tear down for special events / programs at the direction of the Facilities & Outreach Manager.
• Maintain cleaning and sanitation techniques, while utilizing and operating commercial equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness of building and property according to the maintenance and cleaning schedule.
• Monitor and keep all rest rooms stocked with items needed for daily use.
• Weekly set up and changeover of rooms as required for program activities during the week.
• Keeping custodial closet clean and neat.
• Keep outside of buildings properly maintained, which includes daily picking up any accumulated trash.
• Cut grass on a weekly basis / Snow Removal, as needed
• Performs building repairs and performs maintenance repairs, as requested by Facilities & Outreach Manager.
• Assist in driving The Salvation Army’s vehicles for supplies, equipment or service as assigned.
• Assist, as needed and requested, in the Christmas effort including kettles.
• Takes pride in work and in the cleanliness of the building.
• Responsible to make a walkthrough of the building every morning, ensuring all rooms are prepared, properly cleaned and ready to open for service.
• Responsible to make a final pass through of the building ensuring all rooms are prepared and properly cleaned for Sunday services.
• Assist with maintenance of vehicles, making sure all service is up to date.
• Assist with any other projects or covering responsibilities withing other departments, as assigned by the Corps Officers or Facilities & Outreach Manager.

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to drive for The Salvation Army
• Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and PA DHS Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. In addition, completion of a Pennsylvania approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training is necessary prior to employment.
