Job summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College's Custodial – Floor Technician position at the Union Avenue Campus keeps floors clean and safe during night hours. Under general supervision, you’ll scrub, wax, and maintain floors, operate heavy equipment, and assist with emergencies as needed; shift runs 11:00 pm–7:30 am Tue–Sat, with possible after-hours work.

The role requires a high school diploma, valid TN driver's license, and strong communication; preferred is floor-care experience and basic MS

  • Transport moderately heavy objects or equipment as required.
  • Clean and service floor care equipment.
  • Dust and sweep stairs; clean and shine elevators.
  • Use chemicals and supplies according to procedures; operate equipment safely.
  • Observe safety precautions at all times; snow removal from entrances as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Custodial Floor Technician cleans and maintains various types of floor surfaces and performs preventative maintenance on specialized floor equipment. May perform routine custodial duties and special project tasks. This position may be contacted during non‑duty hours for emergencies. The work schedule is Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00pm to 7:30am, and may be modified according to need. After hours, weekend, or holiday work may be required.

Job Duties
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization
  • Perform all assigned tasks in a professional manner in order to reflect the highest integrity of the Custodial Services Department
  • Scrub, strip, wax and polish floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubber and buffers
  • Move heavy furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed
  • Report items that need repair (doors, door checks, furniture lights, faucets, etc.)
  • Transport moderately heavy objects or equipment as required
  • Responsible for cleaning and servicing floor care equipment
  • Periodic dusting and sweeping of stairs
  • Clean and shine elevators
  • Utilize the appropriate chemicals and supplies according to procedures
  • Operate and maintain equipment correctly and safely
  • Observe safety precautions at all times
  • Sweep or shovel snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walkways
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be able to interact in an ever‑growing college community and be able to adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
  • Good oral and written communication skills required, with the ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write correspondence such as letters and internal e‑mail communications
  • Must be able to utilize e‑mail systems such as Outlook 365
    • These include creating such things as equipment status reports, cleaning supply requests, and maintain schedules
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of floor care experience
  • Basic computer software skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in custodial and minor maintenance work.
  • Ability to follow simple instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the students, the public and other employees.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly.
Physical Demands / Working Condition
  • Ability to stand walk sit reach with arms climb or balance stoop, kneel or crouch and talk or hear
  • Must have the ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull up to 250 pounds.
