Job summary

The Custodial and Maintenance Technician at Berkshire Museum is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the building, equipment and grounds to keep them safe and inviting for visitors.

You will perform cleaning of restrooms and spaces, monitor climate and security, assist with moving art, set up for events, and help with basic repairs and snow removal. The role requires physical stamina and comfort with tools.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security systems, general carpentry, and hardware and software that the museum employs.
• Knowledge of wireless and IP-based camera systems, data storage, access control, and other security technology.
• Familiarity with Audio/Visual controls and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning museum restrooms, galleries and office spaces- including mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting, taking out trash and restocking supplies.
• Monitoring temperature and humidity levels in museum collection spaces.
• Building security- be alert for any security concerns that could put visitors and/or artwork at risk (temperature, leaks, spills, visitors trying to enter restricted areas, etc.).
• Help staff with moving art objects and furniture as needed.
• Work with other museum staff on planning for upcoming programs – setting up furniture and cleaning up after events.
• Occasional fabrication of needed items such as display pedestals for artwork or other art installation needs.
• As needed, assist Building Manager, Assistant Manager and outside vendors with maintenance and troubleshooting of building systems including HVAC, plumbing and electrical.
• Clearing snow from sidewalks including shoveling and operating a snowblower.
• Mowing, weed whacking, trimming hedges and weeding outdoor areas as needed
• Cleaning litter and debris from outdoor areas

Job description

Responsibilities to include (but not limited to):

Desired skills:

• Ability to adapt to changing needs of the department to better serve our visitors and staff.
• Ability to think proactively about maintenance changes needed to keep the spaces clean and safe (ie: more floor care needed on rainy days)
• Represent the museum in a professional manner at all times when working with visitors and vendors.
• Ability to recognize and address day-to-day and long-term responsibilities without direct supervision, and be supportive of colleagues in all areas of museum operations.
• Familiarity with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security systems, general carpentry, and hardware and software that the museum employs.
• Comfort with a wide range of technology, including office support software and physical security systems. Knowledge of wireless and IP-based camera systems, data storage, access control, and other security technology.
• Familiarity with Audio/Visual controls and equipment.
• Enthusiastic to learn new technology.
• Physical requirements:
• Ability to operate power tools and machinery, ascend/descend ladders and stairs, position self to maintain equipment, machinery, work at heights, or in confined spaces.
• Ability to observe fine detail when operating machinery, identifying any potential hazards.
• Operate a computer and Microsoft office platform and other basic office equipment
• Lift up to 50 pounds while at work.

Compensation, Benefits and Perks

Starting pay is $23.59/hour
