Job summary

Lufkin ISD is seeking a Custodian to clean and maintain district facilities in accordance with safety and school standards. The role involves following established cleaning schedules, operating cleaning equipment, and performing minor repairs as needed.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a cleaning schedule for floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school building and grounds neat and clean, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas.
• Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
• Assist with lunchroom setup, including arranging tables and chairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure comfort, health, and safety of students and staff; report major repair needs.
• Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal.
• Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
• Open/close buildings daily and ensure doors/panic bolts are secured.
• Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
• Follow safety procedures for lifting, climbing, and operating tools.
• All other duties as assigned.
• Provide professional communication with students, parents, community members, staff, and other professionals.

Primary Purpose:

Clean and maintain district facilities using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Cleaning

1. Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.

Safety

1. Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
2. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
3. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
4. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Other

1. All other duties as assigned.

1. Provide professional communication with students, parents, community members, staff, and other professionals at all times.
2. Use proper phone etiquette at all times, speaking slowly and clearly. Take reliable messages, and route to the appropriate staff.
3. Ensure superior customer care skills are used via eye contact, facial expressions, voice inflections, body language, and an attitude of “going the extra mile” for others.
4. Ensure all requests for information are dealt with in an appropriate timeframe.
5. Create and maintain a welcoming, service-oriented environment toward all internal and external customers.

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
