Job Summary

MaineGeneral Health is looking for an enthusiastic, dependable and experienced food service leader to join our team as a Culinary Services Supervisor at the Alfond Center for Health. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys being where the action is. You'll oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, support and hold team members accountable, help ensure food is prepared and served safely and efficiently, and step in wherever you're needed to keep things moving. The right candidate will set the tone for a positive, professional, and team-oriented environment. You should be comfortable leading a diverse team, addressing challenges head‑on, coaching employees, and helping build a culture where people show up, work together, and take pride in what they do. If you're a leader who can run a tight ship while still being approachable, flexible, and willing to roll up your sleeves, we'd love to hear from you.

Job Description

Schedule: Hours vary based on business needs; every 3rd weekend rotation required.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and support the food service team, including hiring, training, coaching, performance management, and day-to-day staff oversight.
  • Set the tone for a positive and accountable workplace culture by leading by example, recognizing good work, addressing concerns, and helping team members succeed.
  • Oversee the day-to-day flow of food service operations, from receiving and production through preparation, service, and getting food out the door.
  • Prepare and cook food while maintaining knowledge of a variety of cooking techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Monitor staffing and workflow, reassigning responsibilities and jumping in wherever needed to keep operations running smoothly.
  • Manage menu planning, inventory, supplies, and labor resources while identifying opportunities to control costs.
  • Ensure the kitchen consistently meets food safety, sanitation, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Partner with the Executive Chef and other Food & Nutrition leaders to address operational challenges and improve department performance.
  • Participate in and organize community education and outreach events.
  • Be a hands‑on leader who is willing to work alongside the team and step in wherever needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a positive workplace culture through consistent leadership, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Commitment to modeling and promoting MaineGeneral Health's RESPECT values in all interactions with patients, visitors, colleagues and community members.
What We're Looking For
  • At least three years of leadership or supervisory experience in a food service environment preferred.
  • A positive, enthusiastic, and solutions-focused approach to leadership.
  • Strong ability to multitask, prioritize, and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to confidently manage competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Someone present, engaged, and dependable, with a strong sense of accountability for their team and the operation.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to coach, mentor, and hold employees accountable in a fair and respectful way.
  • The ability to make decisions, solve problems, and adjust quickly when priorities change.
  • A willingness to be flexible with scheduling and operational needs.
  • The ability to work effectively with people with different personalities, experience levels, and working styles.
  • Experience coaching employees, managing performance, and navigating difficult conversations while maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a positive workplace culture through consistent leadership, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • American Culinary Federation accreditation and/or a culinary degree highly preferred.
  • Computer experience required.
  • ServSafe certification preferred at hire or within six months of hire.
Why This Role Matters

This isn't a leadership role where you'll spend your day behind a desk. You'll be an active presence in the kitchen, working alongside your team and making sure our patients, employees, and guests receive quality food and service. Food service at MaineGeneral Health is about more than getting meals from the kitchen to the tray line. A good meal can make someone's day, whether it's a patient who needs a little comfort, an employee grabbing lunch during a busy shift, or a visitor spending a long day at the hospital. We take pride in the food we serve and where it comes from. We use responsibly sourced foods and incorporate as many local foods into our menu program as possible, with approximately 20% of our food budget dedicated to locally sourced foods for our patients, employees, and guests. We're also deeply connected to the community, with a strong focus on addressing food insecurity in Central Maine. You'll have the opportunity to help shape a team, strengthen a culture, and make a difference through something as simple and meaningful as a good meal.
