Job summary

Stanford Reglab seeks a Cryo-EM Specialist to support advanced electron microscopy facilities at SLAC. You will operate seven Thermo Fisher cryoEM instruments and two cryoET systems, overseeing experiments and assisting researchers in single particle and tomography studies.

Responsibilities include specimen preparation, data collection, image processing, and training researchers and students. Collaborate with the computing team to ensure robust data handling and protocol development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in structural biology, biophysics, physics, biochemistry, chemistry or bioengineering, or related scientific field and at least two years of relevant work experience, or Master’s degree in related field.
• Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
• General understanding of transmission electron microscopy and cryoelectron microscopy.
• Strong computer skills and ability to learn programs, databases and scientific applications.
• Strong analytical and judgment skills.
• Strong communication skills with scientists at varied experience levels.
• Ability to work independently under deadlines and in teams.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Conduct cryoEM specimen preparation.
• Operate electron microscopes for cryo-specimens.
• Screen cryo-EM specimens for suitability in structural research.
• Assess data collection readiness and perform preliminary quality evaluations.
• Collect image data for users and evaluate data quality.
• Support data collection, storage and processing with computing teams.
• Perform image processing and assist researchers on cryoEM projects.
• Orient and train new staff, users, postdocs and graduate students.
• Develop and support data collection enhancements and instructional material.
