Job summary

A local school district seeks a dedicated individual to ensure the safety of students during morning and afternoon crossings at assigned intersections. Responsibilities include directing traffic, preventing unsafe crossings, and communicating effectively with students and the public. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. This is a contracted 10-month position, ensuring a critical role in maintaining pedestrian safety within the school community.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Direct and control the movement of students at assigned intersections.
  • Patrol intersection and ensure students cross safely.
  • Collect information on vehicle operators who violate signals.

Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for providing maximum protection and assisting students in crossing the street going to and returning from the elementary buildings by directing traffic so that students may cross streets safely.

Shift Details
  • AM shift: 8:00‑8:30 am
  • PM shift: 2:50‑3:20 pm
  • Compensation: $10 per shift
Required Clearances
  • Act 34 Criminal background check
  • Act 151 Child Abuse
  • Act 114 FBI Fingerprinting clearance

Qualifications
Education / Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Maintain valid PA driver’s license
Skills / Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate signals for controlling vehicular traffic
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic safety as it relates to pedestrian movement at intersections
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to follow a set schedule
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, administrators, and the general public
  • Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code as it relates to school crossings and school zones
  • Ability to recognize and communicate potentially dangerous traffic situations and hazards in the environment
  • Ability to coordinate the movement of traffic with the safe flow of student pedestrians by choosing appropriate times to step into the street to create gaps in traffic
  • Ability to relate to student pedestrians and instruct them on safe methods of crossing the street by modeling appropriate street skills and behavior
  • Ability to prevent students from crossing the street in an unsafe manner or when traffic is moving
Physical
  • Ability to stand and walk outside in a variety of weather conditions and environmental extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, humidity, rain, snow, sleet, hail, and air pollution
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, crouch, twist, turn, and reach
  • Verbally direct students across the street
Functions / Duties / Responsibilities
  • Promptly obey all directives from the S.S. Palmer/Parkside Building Principal
  • Protect the lives of school‑age pedestrians
  • Direct and control the movement of students at assigned intersections
  • Patrol an assigned intersection, direct traffic to stop, and direct students across the street safely
  • Stand in roadway with STOP paddle continuously raised to shoulder height to show that pedestrians are using the crosswalk
  • Prevent students from crossing the street while traffic is moving
  • Direct traffic at an assigned intersection when necessary to provide for the movement of school buses or to relieve temporary traffic congestion
  • Collect appropriate information concerning operators of vehicles that fail to obey proper signals and/or devices at the intersection and in the school zone
  • Report violators of the Vehicle Code as it applies to school crossings and school zones
  • Cooperate, assist, and communicate timely, accurately, and effectively, maintaining a positive environment and positive communications with fellow employees and the public to achieve mutual goals
  • Participate in any safety‑related training required by the district
  • Perform related work
Secondary Duties
  • Perform all tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the S.S. Palmer/Parkside Building Principal
Terms of Employment
  • Contracted 10‑month position (one school year term)
