Job description

Position Summary

The school crossing guard for the elementary school is responsible for ensuring the safety and assisting students navigate crossing the street before and after school.

Essential Duties
  • Assessing traffic flow to identify potential hazards
  • Directing students and other individuals to cross the street
  • Removing potential hazards from the assigned crossing area
  • Reporting unsafe driving to school administration or law enforcement
  • Monitoring rapidly changing traffic conditions and responding accordingly
  • Explaining the crossing rules to pedestrians
  • Providing feedback regarding the safety of assigned crosswalks
  • Ensure a safety vest is always worn
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Strong observational skills to monitor traffic flow, pedestrian movement and overall surroundings
  • Ability to clearly and calmly communicate instructions to children, parents and drivers, ensuring a safe crossing experience
  • Capability to remain upright for extended periods, work outdoors in various weather conditions and respond quickly in emergencies
  • Familiarity with local traffic laws, pedestrian safety rules and crossing guard protocols
  • Proficiency with equipment such as stop signs, safety vests, hand signals and crossing aids
  • Effective at managing interactions with children, parents and the community, promoting safe and respectful behavior
  • Ability to think and remain calm under pressure to handle unexpected traffic or pedestrian situations effectively
  • Punctuality and reliability to ensure consistent presence during designated school or crosswalk hours

Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above, in addition to the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to manipulate, handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is required to supervise students requiring the employee to match walking speed that matches the student and may at times require the ability to run to safeguard students. The employee may occasionally lift, carry, move and/or, when appropriately trained, restrain school-age students. Employee must occasionally move equipment and/or supplies. Employee is occasionally required to drive. Employee is regularly required to handle stressful situations and resolve conflicts. The job is performed for the most part in a school setting with occasional outside weather conditions. The noise level is that of a typical school setting.
