Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a Crossing Guard to safely escort school-age children across designated intersections before and after school. This role requires interacting with the public in a respectful, professional manner and may involve outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Two shifts are required: typically mornings and afternoons. The position emphasizes safety, diversity and daily adherence to city standards, with background and medical checks as part of the process.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass background checks and eye/hearing tests.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with traffic control procedures preferred.

  • Guide pedestrian traffic at streets, schools, railroad crossings, or construction sites.
  • Act as an "Ambassador" for the City, carrying out work and interacting with coworkers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.

Job description

This position is responsible for safely crossing school age children at an appointed post before and after school.

Union Affiliation: Non-Union

Pay Grade: $20.00 Hourly, $40 Daily

Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

  • Safely escort children across the street at appointed intersections in the City of Burlingtonusing the crosswalks.
  • Guide pedestrian traffic at such places as streets, schools, railroad crossings, or construction sites.
  • Act as "Ambassador" for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Must be able to work 2 shifts a day. Approximately: 7:30am to 8:20am and 2:40pm to 3:20pm.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must wear Crossing Guard Traffic safety vest.
  • Ability to use a hand held 18"x18" Stop sign to stop traffic.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to pass eye and hearing test.
  • Familiarity with traffic control procedures preferred.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers and the general public in a courteous and professional manner.

  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior at all times.

  • Ability to maintain professional appearance while engaging in field work, by refraining from any use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior required.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate certification of completion for all classes and trainings.
  • Familiarity with traffic control procedures preferred.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
