Job summary

The City of Burlington seeks a Crossing Guard to help children safely cross streets at appointed posts before and after school. You will work two short shifts daily, 7:30am–8:20am and 2:40pm–3:20pm, standing at crossings with a safety vest and Stop sign, ensuring students’ safe passage.

This is a non‑union, entry level role requiring reliability, courtesy, and the ability to handle all weather conditions. Training and background checks are provided as part of the City’s commitment to safe,

Qualifications

  • Must actively support City diversity, equity, and inclusion within job responsibilities.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion evidenced by ongoing trainings.
  • Must work 2 shifts a day: approximately 7:30am to 8:20am and 2:40pm to 3:20pm.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must wear Crossing Guard Safety vest.
  • Ability to use a hand held 18”x18” Stop sign to stop traffic.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to pass eye and hearing test.
  • Familiarity with traffic control procedures preferred.
  • Ability to interact courteously with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to uphold the 6 operating principles; Customer Service, Fiscal Responsibility, Good Labor Relations, Employee Empowerment, Cooperation and Constant Improvement.
  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
  • Must be a flexible team player who takes direction well and is safety conscious.
  • Maintain professional appearance while in field work.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate certification of completion for all trainings.
  • Regular attendance is necessary.
  • Understand and comply with City standards and safety rules.

Essential Job Functions
  • Safely escort children across the street at appointed intersections in the City of Burlington using the crosswalks.
  • Guide pedestrian traffic at such places as streets, schools, railroad crossings, or construction sites.
  • Act as “Ambassador” for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
