Job summary

Sylvania in Alaska seeks a paraeducator to assist in caring for and tutoring students with diverse needs. Placement may be in Intensive Resource (IR) or Extended Resource (ER) classrooms depending on district and building requirements.

The role requires interaction with students, staff, and families, adherence to safety and de-escalation protocols, and the ability to work outside in cold conditions. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package and a structured work year.

Qualifications

• Must meet at least one of three qualifications: diploma/equivalent with ParaProfessional Assessment or pass within four months; or an associate's degree or higher; or two years of higher education (48+ sem hrs).
• Must have understanding of developmental disabilities.
• Must demonstrate proper lifting skills to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Must have empathy for special needs of disabled children and communicate with students appropriately.
• Successful completion of de-escalation training within six months of employment.
• Knowledge of basic reading, math, and age-appropriate curricular areas.
• Must communicate clearly with students, staff, and parents and calm and defuse conflicts.
• Must be able to stay outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
• If signing skills are listed, must have ASL I and ASL II.
