Job summary

North Star Borough School District is seeking a dedicated paraprofessional to assist in care and tutoring for students with diverse needs. The position may be placed in Intensive Resource (IR) or Extended Resource (ER) classrooms based on district and building needs.

New hires receive a $2,000 sign-on bonus and a $2,000 retention bonus paid in installments through December and June. Weekday schedule is 7 hours per day, 9 months per year, with a Grade 7 hourly rate of $23.15–$25.90 DOE and ESSA

Qualifications

  • Must meet at least one of the following three qualifications: high school diploma or equivalent and ParaProfessional Assessment, or associate's degree or higher, or completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours).
  • Must have an understanding of developmental disabilities.
  • Must demonstrate proper lifting skills to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Must have empathy for special needs of disabled children including the ability to communicate with physically and mentally disabled students.
  • Successful completion of de-escalation training within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas for age-level students.
  • Must communicate clearly with students, staff, and parents, calm upset students, defuse conflict, and safely restrain dangerous students.
  • Must be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle; if signing skills are listed, must have ASL I and ASL II.

Job description

This position includes a $2,000 new hire bonus, which is paid after the successful completion of the first 30 days of employment.

In addition to the new hire bonus, this position also offers a $2,000 retention bonus. New hires will receive the first $1,000 installment in December upon completing the first semester, with the remaining $1,000 paid in June after finishing the school year. The bonus will be prorated for part-time employees.

Job Qualifications/Requirements (please review job description for qualifications and duties of the position):
  1. Must meet at least one of the following three qualifications:
    1. A high school diploma, or equivalent, and have completed the ParaProfessional Assessment, or have the ability to pass the ParaProfessional Assessment within four (4) months of hire; or
    2. An associate's degree or higher; or
    3. Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent

  3. Must demonstrate proper lifting skills in order to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
  4. Must have empathy for special needs of disabled children including the ability to respectfully and appropriately communicate with physically and mentally disabled students.
  5. Successful completion of de-escalation training required within the first six (6) months of employment.
  6. Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas appropriate for age-level of students.
  7. Must possess the ability to communicate clearly and consistently with students, staff, and parents, including the ability to calm students who are upset or angry, defuse conflict situations, and to safely restrain out-of-control students who present a danger to self or others.
  8. Must be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
  9. Must have a valid driver's license, use of a personal vehicle, If the posted vacancy lists a requirement for signing skills, the applicant must at a minimum have completed ASL I and ASL II.
