Job summary

Trinity Health is seeking a dedicated Critical Care Paramedic for MercyOne Centerville EMS. The role requires a Paramedic license (Iowa and/or Illinois) with Iowa endorsement, and BLS/ACLS/PALS certifications.

Full-time 80 hours biweekly, rotating 24-hour shifts, and on-site operations. Responsibilities include delivering high-level prehospital care, airway management, medication administration, and documentation, with on-call and event coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Graduate of an approved Paramedic course with current Iowa and/or Illinois Paramedic certification, or Iowa RN Exemption and/or Illinois PHRN certification.
• Iowa Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable MVR.

Responsibilities

• Delivers critical care paramedic level emergency medical care to patients of all ages.
• Responds to ambulance calls and documents care provided.
• Assists in Emergency Department with airway management, medication administration, and assessments.
• Completes patient care documentation after each call and during ED stay.
• Operates ambulance safely and covers on-call hours as needed.
• Maintains EMS inventory, equipment, pagers, and radios.

POSITION PURPOSE

Delivers timely and effective critical care paramedic level emergency medical care to patients of all ages in both emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring stabilization and/or resuscitation as needed due to illness or injury. Responds to ambulance calls, follows established system protocols and NIMS standards for scene management, and accurately document all care provided. When available, assists in the Emergency Department by performing advanced airway management, medication administration, and assists with delegated tasks such as assessments, vital signs, IV initiation, ECGs, and documentation, as well as decontamination, cleaning, and restocking of equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Care

• Rapidly assess patients and provide lifesaving care according to protocol.
• Initiate basic and advanced airway management.
• Provide direct patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings within the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice, including the administration of approved medications.
• Provide age-appropriate care across neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

Transport & Operations

• Operate ambulance safely; transport sick or injured persons while avoiding motions detrimental to patients.
• Cover on-call hours and staff special events as directed to meet departmental needs.

Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance

• Perform daily/weekly vehicle and rig checks; maintain, restock and clean unit after each run.
• Manage EMS inventory; maintain pagers, radios and other equipment; report discrepancies and maintenance needs.

Documentation & Quality

• Complete patient care documentation after each call and in the Emergency Department as needed.
• Participate in peer review and chart audits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice, including all clinical procedures, patient care standards, and legal/regulatory requirements governing emergency medical services. This knowledge should encompass state and local protocols, documentation standards, infection control practices, and the ability to apply these principles effectively in both pre-hospital and hospital settings. Additionally, the Critical Care Paramedic should demonstrate proficiency in recognizing limitations of the role and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Graduate of an approved Paramedic course with a current Iowa and/or Illinois Paramedic certification, or an Iowa RN Exemption and/or Illinois PHRN certification, based on role and service area. If working in the Genesis Market, need Iowa and Illinois within 120 days of hire or transfer.
• Iowa Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report, meeting all organizational motor vehicle safety standards.
• National Incident Management System (NIMS) - 100 (preferred).
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
• American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
• Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) provider (preferred).
• Advance Medical Life Support (AMLS) provider (preferred).
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
