Title: Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) Navigator

Program(s) and Location: Crisis Stabilization Unit (Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael, CA)

Schedule: Full-time non-exempt, 40 hours/week, Monday- Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and may require working some evenings and weekend schedules

Pay rate: $22.98/hour - $24.12/hour, depending on years of experience and education

Position Description:

The CSU Navigator is responsible for providing recovery-focused crisis intervention, community resources, and support and system navigation services to clients. The Program is designed to provide a variety of mental health services which may include: crisis intervention, intense brief case management and support, system navigation, and linkages to services for individuals residing in Sacramento County living with a mental illness or emotional disturbance and requiring crisis intervention. Navigators are placed at various access points (i.e., local emergency rooms) to help address gaps in crisis response services and to better meet the needs of those experiencing a mental health crisis in the least restrictive manner possible. The goals of this program are to improve the client’s experience in achieving wellness and recovery, provide timely access to needed services, reduce unnecessary hospitalizations, inpatient days, and recidivism, and mitigate unnecessary expenditures of law enforcement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (includes the following; other duties may be assigned)

  • Support individuals with active listening, demonstration of empathy, and carry a message of hope and recovery.
  • Observe, assess, intervene, and refer (within one’s scope of practice) in situations with clients regarding mental health symptoms, physical health symptoms, and substance use issues.
  • Provide positive public relations, community referrals, information, and support by linking clients to needed resources; advocate with and on behalf of clients and significant support persons the clients have identified.
  • Accurately complete all necessary forms, reports, and paperwork required by the program on a timely basis (e.g., progress notes, special incident reports, discharge summaries, Medi-Cal billing, Avatar forms, and HMIS).
  • Ensure the office, house, rooms, units, and yard are clean and fit for occupancy, where applicable. Provide and assist with cleaning as needed.
  • Act as a designated Mandated Reporter for the observed or suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, disabled individuals, dependent adults, and elder/senior citizens. Mandated Reporter also includes "Duty to Warn" which includes the responsibility to notify authorities and the intended victim(s) of physical harm.
  • Transport clients as needed.
  • Ensure the protection and confidentiality of all Protected Health Information (PHI) by following all policies and procedures in the AGENCY HIPAA Manual.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Ability to work with individuals who have a mental health diagnosis. Experience is highly desirable.
  • Lived experience as a mental health consumer or a family member/loved one of a mental health consumer is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Sacramento community organizations and community resources is highly desirable.
  • Experience in mental health crisis intervention is highly desirable.
  • Experience with persons who have substance abuse problems, preferably individuals who are dually diagnosed (mental health & substance abuse) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of 12-Step Programs and/or personal experience with substance abuse recovery is highly desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Driving records must meet, and continue to meet, the underwriting standards established by the generalized driving guidelines used by our insurance broker's underwriting requirements.

Other Skills, Abilities, and Job Requirements:

  • Must be willing to undergo a physical, a drug test, an annual Flu shot, and accept the following vaccinations provided by the hospital: Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; PPD (TB Test); Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR); Varicella (Chicken Pox); Tdap (Td/Tetanus).
  • Ability to pass clearance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and/or Department of Justice (DOJ) background screenings.
    • Work overtime as requested and approved.
