Job summary

The Cumberland County Public Defender Office seeks a Social Worker to assist attorneys by gathering client information that may mitigate or influence a client’s criminal case, including housing, health, trauma, and life history details. The role involves presenting findings to the assigned attorney, coordinating referrals to services, and supporting court proceedings.

It is full-time temporary with grant funding for one year and may become hybrid after six months, with a pre-employment drug

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.
• Master’s degree in Social Work preferred (but not required) from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

• Interviewing clients.
• Identifying and obtaining appropriate services based on the client’s stated needs (housing, mental health, medical, employment, education, and other supports).
• Making contact with client’s attorney prior to any contact with client and coordinating meetings with the attorney.
• Working with attorneys to coordinate client cases and advocacy, including preparing correspondence and reports.
• Establishing and developing relationships with community services and supports (mental health authority, law enforcement, housing authority, education services).
• Appearing in court with clients and monitoring progress during pendency of cases.
• Collaborating with jail staff to ensure client needs are addressed; participating in outreach; assisting in data collection and analysis.
