Job summary

The City of Griffin is seeking a Crew Leader who will lead and participate in the work of an assigned crew using a variety of equipment for construction and maintenance across city properties, streets, water distribution, wastewater collection, and landscape and concrete operations.

Essential duties include operating diverse equipment, performing inspections, maintaining safety protocols, and managing tools and materials across cemetery, golf & parks, streets, and water/wastewater tasks.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 months of experience operating listed equipment.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia license and acceptable driving history.
  • MUTCD Flagging Certification, Soil and Erosion Certification Level 1A, and Trench Excavation/trenching awareness certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the work of an assigned crew across cemetery, golf & parks, streets, and water/wastewater areas.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles and equipment; perform preventive maintenance and record logs.
  • Perform landscape and grounds maintenance, irrigation, paving, and drainage tasks as required.
  • Assist with safety practices, set up work zones, and manage inventory of tools and supplies.
  • Interact with the public and provide courteous service while handling interments and cemetery maps.

Job description

The individual in this position will lead and participate in the work of an assigned crew which will use and maintain a variety of equipment for the heavy-duty nature of the jobs that will be performed for construction and maintenance activities associated with City properties, streets, right of ways, water distribution, wastewater collection, and/or landscape and concrete operations. The Crewleader has the responsibility of assessing the abilities of team members and aligning these with the tasks at hand to determine the work method, necessary tools, equipment and supplies. Essential duties include:

  • Operates a variety of equipment including, but not limited to: edger, weed eater, shovel, hand-held sprayers, chainsaw, leaf blower, demolition saws, pneumatic hammers, mowers, bushhogs, and tractors.
  • Operates a variety of standard heavy equipment including, but not limited to: vehicles, aerial and boom slope mowers, articulating bucket lifts, clam and bucket trucks, trencher, dump trucks, articulated loader, rubber tire tractor\/loader, trailer, bulldozer, backhoe loader, mini-excavators, off-highway truck, and skid steer loader.
  • Performs pre-trip and daily inspections to assigned equipment or vehicle; checks brakes, lights, belts, hoses, fluid levels, air pressure, etc., reports equipment or vehicle service, maintenance, or repair needs to immediate supervisor. Records inspections and routine service log.
  • Assists in the routine maintenance and repair of City grounds, properties, systems, and equipment.
  • Loads and hauls gravel, debris, and other materials onto dump trucks (poundage less than CDL requirements) to and from job sites.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Assists with maintenance of safety equipment (i.e., atmospheric gas detector calibrations, maintenance\/repair of fall arrest equipment, maintenance\/repair of forced ventilation blowers.)
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; assists in cleaning vehicles and other equipment.
  • Assists with loading, unloading, and moving equipment in and around job sites and storage yard.
  • Sets up safe work sites, ensures safe work practices and flags traffic as needed.
  • Ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly stocked with parts and supplies, and that routine maintenance is performed on these and any tools used.
  • Performs related duties.
Department specific duties also include:
Cemetery:
  • Locates proper grave sites, measures and marks site for preparation of interments, and setting of markers and monuments.
  • Opens and closes crypt and niche doors for interments.
  • Assists the public in the location of grave sites.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on sunken graves and existing foot markers.
  • Maintains the appearance and functionality of the cemetery, including general landscaping; mowing and trimming of grass, applying fertilizers and pesticides, planting, pruning and care of trees and shrubs, removal of trash and debris.
  • Performs tamping, seeding, and strawing lots.
  • Cleans and maintains mausoleum and columbarium structures.
  • Maintains detailed records of daily work completed, including areas serviced and materials used.
  • Must have the ability to interact with families in a sensitive and respectful manner and the ability to read and interpret cemetery specific maps, in order to navigate cemetery grounds.

***Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.***

Golf & Parks:
  • Assists with the repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Paints buildings and course signs as needed.
  • Aerates grasses.
  • Moves tee markers.
  • Maintains ball washers.
  • Mows city parks and median islands.
  • Assist with upkeep of equipment repair, organization of work shop, tools and parts inventory.
  • Assist with maintenance and operation of drainage, irrigation and other mechanical watering systems.
  • Spreads granular materials using large tractor mounted spreaders, and walking push spreaders.
  • Trims shrubbery; prunes and removes trees.
  • Plants and maintains trees, grass, shrubs and flowers in landscaped areas.
  • Calibrates and maintains various spray equipment such as boom sprayers, backpack sprayers and hand-held sprayers to apply fertilizers and pesticides.

***Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. Previous relevant golf course maintenance experience, preferred.***

Streets:
  • Plants trees, grass, shrubs and flowers in landscaped areas.
  • Blows leaves from sidewalks, parking lots and sidewalks.
  • Trims and removes limbs and debris.
  • Empties trash containers and picks up trash.
  • May assist in the application of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Assists with tree trimming, pruning and removal.
  • May assist in the installation and maintenance of sidewalks.
  • Performs flagging duties associated with work zone traffic control.
  • Pulls ditches, and cuts or removes debris.
  • Performs street maintenance duties, planned and unplanned.
  • Pours concrete; forms and grades sidewalks.
  • Repairs street cuts and potholes.
  • Repairs damaged lawns and landscaping; plants grass.
  • Assists in set-up and clean-up of special events.
  • Installs and disassembles holiday decorations.
Water Distribution/Wastewater Collections:
  • Repairs water leaks in main lines and sewer lines which require the ability to locate the issue.
  • Flushes water lines and fire hydrants; checks water pressure.
  • Installs water meters.
  • Changes cut-offs.
  • Assists with excavation projects.
  • Leads the crew and participates in the repair of excavation sites.
Position Requirements
  • Employee must have the visual ability to distinguish colors, detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians.
  • The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, grease and irritating chemicals; therefore, the use of provided protective devices such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves, safety vest, etc., is required.
  • The work is typically performed while mostly bending, crouching, stooping, standing and walking.
  • The work involves frequent pushing, pulling, manipulating, and\/or lifting or carrying loads or objects of up to 75 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds unassisted.
  • Climbing steep slopes and ladders, and using tools or equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is mostly outdoors will be performed in all forms of weather that may be very hot, cold, extreme or inclement.
  • Work may be performed in the presence of citizens and have traffic which may contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The ability to read, write, follow complex verbal or written orders or instruction, understand and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to perform work in confined spaces including manholes, culverts, and other areas with space restrictions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and adequately and respectfully deal with members of the general public
  • Employee should possess a high level of personal responsibility for completing assigned duties with little supervision or intervention by the respective Supervisor.
  • Minimum 18 months of experience operating stated equipment specifically listed under major duties.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed.
  • Possession of valid MUTCD Flagging Certification, if applicable
  • Possession of valid Soil and Erosion Certification Level 1A, if applicable.
  • Possession of Trench Excavation and Trenching Awareness Certification, or obtainment within one year of employment, if applicable

***Employee may be required to be on scheduled “stand-by.” Stand-by is the time an employee shall be available after completing his or her regular work shift, to include weekends and holidays, in which the employee is required to be available for call back to return to work in case of emergency or need. Stand by and call back are both compensable.***

***Though infrequent, in the case of an extreme event or emergency maintenance, employee will be required to report to report back to work. This may be after regular working hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.***

***This is an hourly position at a pay rate of $22.49 with a competitive benefits package includig a generous pension plan.***
