Job summary

Weeks Marine, Inc. is seeking a capable assistant deckhand to support dredging operations. You will learn and perform duties across mooring, line handling, cable work, deck maintenance and equipment loading, while ensuring safe, compliant operations.

Applicants should be able to live aboard the vessel for a full rotation, understand hand signals, follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively with crew under supervision. A strong emphasis on safety and teamwork is required.

Qualifications

  • Willing to work long hours, up to 84 per week.
  • Able to live aboard vessel for full rotation.
  • Able to understand hand signals.
  • Able to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with craft workers under supervision.
  • Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand tools, power tools and layout tools.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and assist all listed duties.
  • Secure mooring lines to the dredge, scows, dredge Tender or attending plant.
  • Splice and repair cables and towing ropes.
  • Assist with lubrication of deck machinery.
  • Load and unload materials from the dredge, deck barges, scows and equipment.
  • Sweep and wash down all decks on the dredge and attending plant.
  • Chip and paint decks and superstructure of the dredge and attending plant.
  • Assist with work on the pontoon line, submerge line, scow or attending plant.
  • Assist with work on the anchors and spud systems.
  • Assist with cleaning of the pump and work on the cutter head.
  • Ensure safe deployment of survival craft and evacuation of site personnel (MMC with AB endorsement).
  • Follow safety policies and work toward an “Incident and Injury Free” environment.

Assist Deckhands by performing supportive duties as directed and will work under immediate supervision. The level and degree of job responsibilities and requirements vary depending on months of experience and assigned job step.

Experience Level
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
  • Learn and assist all the following duties:

  • Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand tools, power tools and layout tools.
Requirements
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) preferred, or willing to obtain upon hire.
  • Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
  • Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Performs other duties as required.
