Job description

Performs mid-level complex work. Work involves supervising a crew, and participating in troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining all aspects of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems in a safe, effective, and efficient manner to ensure public health and safety, while maintaining compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rules and regulations. This includes water and wastewater mains, services, pumps, valves, manholes, lift stations, meter installation and reading and related infrastructure. Crew Leader must be available to work overtime and be “Primary on Call” as assigned by supervisor. Works under minimal supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
  • Evaluates daily work assignments, coordinating and delegating duties to subordinates as is necessary for timely completion of projects.
  • Operates heavy equipment, such as a maintainer, backhoe, sewer jet machine, bulldozer, spreader box, air compressor, or heavy truck as required and instructed.
  • Operates light equipment such as a tractor, mower, weed eater, shredder, or truck as required and instructed.
  • Prepares and maintains schedules for maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Repairs and/or replaces water and sewer mains, valves, manholes, and fire hydrants.
  • Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition.
  • Installs new water and sewer taps and mains.
  • Cleans sewer lines.
  • Lifts heavy material and equipment.
  • Repairs and/or replaces leaking pipes.
  • Maintains inventory of materials needed.
  • May install drainpipes.
  • Perform confined space entry and operate hand-held hazardous gas detector.
  • Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on-call rotation and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years related work experience and/or technical training in construction, or water or wastewater utility operations field.
Required Certificates and Licenses
  • TCEQ Class “I” Collection License.
  • TCEQ Class “C” water distribution license.
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Texas Driver’s License at the time of hire or begin the process of obtaining it within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must have a basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within three (3) months of the hire date.
  • Must maintain appropriate licenses and certificates, once earned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or trade school in a closely related field.
  • Four years related work experience in construction, or water or wastewater utility operations field.
  • Experience working for a government entity such a city, state, or county.

NOTE: Starting salary for this position is $27.52 per hour. Maximum salary will depend on the education/experience of the selected candidate
