Job summary

Qualifications

Job description

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this classification is to supervise, direct, and participate with work crews involved in building and grounds maintenance. This is a safety sensitive position that requires a drug screen.

Essential Functions

• Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals.
• Supervises and assists work crews involved in the operation of heavy motor equipment to maintain and/or repair County buildings and grounds.
• Monitors work crew to ensure safe and proper operation of equipment and to enforce and ensure conformance to County safety and rules and regulations.
• Removes trees, bushes, shrubs, stumps, rocks, and other items using various types of equipment.
• Fabricates and installs gates, fences, etc. on County property.
• Restores posts, cables, concrete, fences, and gates using various types of equipment to include augers, and welding and cutting torches.
• Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on County equipment and vehicles and reports resolves minor or reports major mechanical problems to the Park Maintenance Supervisor.
• Mows and maintains grass and fields using lawnmowers, tractors, weed eaters, and other equipment.
• Lays and repairs cross ties and landscape timbers used to beautify parks and grounds.
• Hauls mulch for utilization in landscaping of County property.
• Repairs, replaces, or installs park equipment, water lines, and drain lines.
• Shoots and lays out grades and elevation according to specifications.
• Installs post cables and chains to control parking and access to parks and other grounds.
• Drives County vehicle to work sites to transport workers, materials, and supplies.
• Performs landscaping and excavating tasks to include moving heavy equipment, dirt, rocks, and other materials and supplies.
• Transports furniture, equipment, and other materials to/for County departments.
• Supervises and assists crew members in moving furniture not in use to storage or other office buildings and painting the inside and outside of buildings and offices.
• Confers with the Assistant Maintenance Supervisor regarding work orders, problems, etc.
• Provides supervision and assistance to work crews in the performance of all duties

Additional Job Functions

Disperses various types of sprays, pesticides, and other chemicals to control harmful insects and pests.

• Performs general custodial duties as necessary.
• Plants and maintains trees, flowers, and shrubs.
• Removes leaves, trash and other items to maintain neat, clean environment, using leaf blower.
• Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
• Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
• Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training & Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required: Associates degree preferred
• Minimum of three years’ related experience in building and grounds maintenance
• Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position
• Applicants who are offered this job MUST take a DOT pre-employment drug test. Passing the drug test is required in order to start the job.

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment to include a forklift, bobcats, tractors, bush hogs, lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, blowers, concrete mixers, hand tools, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials up to 50lbs. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
