General Definition of Work

The grounds maintenance worker, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion installing and maintaining landscape, pruning trees and shrubs, and ensuring cleanliness and safety of outdoor areas. Position operates grounds maintenance machinery, equipment, and tools. Employee performs district-wide work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Maintenance Operations Supervisor.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain landscaped areas consisting of lawns, bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, etc. through established practices and procedures
  • Perform duties such as planting, watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, renovating, fertilizing, and pruning
  • Inspect school grounds to remove debris such as leaves, rocks, or other debris that could become a safety hazard or detract from the appearance of the property
  • Transport rubbish to the local landfill
  • Assist in applying herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely
  • Maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used as instructed
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and related facilities
  • Assist plumbing department in repairs of irrigation systems on athletic fields
  • Assist in the laying of forms, pouring and finishing concrete including sidewalks and slabs; install playground equipment and drinking fountains
  • Assist in preparation and installation of mobile classrooms
  • Operate motorized equipment including but not limited to fork lifts, skid steer loaders, backhoes, tractors, bush hog, finishing mowers, reel mowers, riding mowers and push mowers
  • Assist in the delivery of portable lights to athletic events for extra security in addition of stationary lights
  • Maintain and repair detention ponds, playground equipment, and buffer areas at all school owned sites
  • Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
  • Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic equipment and methods of grounds maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of grounds maintenance tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Working knowledge of ADA requirements and detention pond repair and maintenance
  • Ability to learn methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the preparation and maintenance of landscaped grounds
  • Ability to learn methods and techniques used in the application of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
  • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools or equipment related to grounds maintenance
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of six (6) months of ground-related experience required
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's class "A" CDL restricted license within nine months of employment
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to/from work
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Medium to heavy work that requires the exertion of force 50-60 pounds frequently, and up to 25 pounds constantly, or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects
  • Work regularly requires frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities
  • Work regularly requires the exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
  • Ability to move to other work locations
  • Visual acuity requires observing general surroundings and activities. Vision to read printed materials or monitoring devices
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications
  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic)
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Must be adaptable to performing under mild to high levels of stress
