Crane Technician 1st Class

Position Summary:
Perform skilled work in the maintenance of RTG and STS cranes. Supervises all work assignments and job planning for repairs, installation, and regular maintenance. Assists in delegating work in shop; checks work for adherence to the department procedures and relevant codes. Supervises the completion or related paperwork, such as work orders, job assignments, time sheets, vacation requests, safety meetings and accident reports. Supervises shop safety, inventory needs, and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:
• Interact with vendors and all levels of Port Houston management and departments to determine cause of issues reported to cranes
• Diagnose problems or recurring malfunctions; choose the course of action and repair or troubleshoot techniques to diagnose problems
• Reconcile downtime events after each occurrence, email shift log to supervisors at end of shift
• Supervise shop operations in the absence of the Foreman
• Maintain routine records related to work performed and material used
• Coordinate repairs and maintenance schedules with Operations Dept. when needed
• Interpret blueprints, sketches, and drawings in the installation and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment
• Must be able to utilize MS Office suite software
• Must be able to work shift work as required
• Enforces departmental rules and regulations governing Port Houston employees
• Must have ample knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems installed on Port Houston equipment
• Assists and advises technicians with complex or unusual assignments. Must have supervisory experience
• Lead a group of mechanics, electricians, and crane technicians by coordinating maintenance related activities with manager on duty during shift work. Must maintain good working
relationship with Operations Dept. personnel
• While on shift, must reconcile downtime events with manager on duty after each occurrence and email shift log to managers / supervisors at end of shift.
• Operate truck used to transport tools and supplies to job site
• Ensure safety and environmental procedures are exercised during the performance of daily activities
• Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
• Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor
• Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)
• Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience:
• High School diploma or GED equivalent required
• 5+ years electrician experience required
• 5+ years mechanic experience required
• Electrician Journeyman license preferred
• Certificates from vocational trade schools desirable

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:
• Knowledge of electricity, electrical systems, and relevant electrical codes: National Electrical code or the National Safety code
• Knowledge of basic troubleshooting and repairs
• Knowledge of programmable logic controller and variable frequency drive desirable
• Knowledge of medium and high voltage switch gear desirable
• Knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic systems desirable
• Organizational skills
• Good judgment and quick-thinking skills
• Ability to give written and oral directions
• Ability to communicate with others
• Ability to climb and be comfortable at heights
• Knowledge of safety precautions necessary to deal with occupational hazards.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to operate forklift, if needed
• Ability to operate M5 Maintenance Management computer system or equivalent as required
• Ability to obtain State of Texas Electrician’s license
• A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
• A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
