Job Description: CPU Performance Modeling Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated CPU Performance Modeling Engineer to join our architecture research team in developing a cycle-accurate performance and power model for next-generation CPUs. This role is ideal for engineers passionate about simulation, microarchitecture, and performance analysis, with a desire to work at the forefront of CPU innovation.

You will play a key role in configuring simulation environments, automating benchmark workloads, generating and managing checkpoints, and analyzing simulation outputs. You’ll contribute to cutting-edge architectural innovations by leveraging tools such as GEM5, McPAT, and SimPoint, while collaborating with a world-class team of researchers and engineers.

• Configure and build open-source CPU simulation frameworks (e.g., GEM5, McPAT) on Linux
• Generate and validate simulation checkpoints using the SimPoint toolset
• Automate the simulation workflow including LSF grid job submission, scripting, and data collection
• Analyze workload output statistics using Python or custom tools to identify architectural trade-offs
• Collaborate on new simulator features and enhancements through coding, debugging, and testing
• Contribute to ongoing research in CPU performance, power modeling, and microarchitectural design

Minimum Qualifications

• Proficiency in C++ and strong foundation in object-oriented programming
• Comfortable working in a Linux environment (shell scripting, build systems, environment config)
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Bash
• Understanding of computer architecture fundamentals: pipelines, out-of-order execution (O3), cache hierarchy
• Knowledge of instruction set architectures (ISAs) and basic assembly language
• Hands-on experience with the GEM5 simulator
• Strong communication skills and ability to document findings and tools clearly
• M.S. degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
• Direct experience generating SimPoint checkpoints from CPU benchmark workloads (e.g., SPEC)
• Familiarity with McPAT for power modeling and estimation
• Experience coding, customizing, or debugging the GEM5 simulator
• Knowledge of CPU performance modeling and architecture trade-off analysis
