Job description

Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise.

Our sights are set high and our problems are hard, and we believe that diversity in the workplace is what makes us smarter, drives better insights, and will ultimately lift us all to success. We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment that embraces our differences, and supports and celebrates all of our team members.

What You’ll Do:

In the Battery Management System (BMS) Simulation Engineer role, you will be responsible for owning simulation models for Archer’s high voltage battery controls system and verifying its safety-critical functionality – enabling the use of electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft for urban air mobility. The BMS simulation deliverables will span all phases of the product development life cycle: development, implementation, validation, and continuous improvement.

Specifically, you will…

  • Lead and coordinate BMS simulation modeling with individual team members and subject matter experts across Battery Engineering and its teammates/partners
  • Work closely with stakeholders to define simulation requirements
  • Create reduced order models to implement the functionality of complex physical plant models for BMS simulation
  • Manage and maintain multiple fidelity model libraries related to battery and battery controls simulations for internal customer team deliveries
  • Analyze simulation data to generate performance reports and metrics, provide clear, actionable insights on expected vs actual system behaviors
  • Implement continuous improvements to the models to ensure they remain accurate, reliable, and aligned with industry standards and customer expectations
  • Develop intuitive diagnostic interfaces for controllers to facilitate troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Validate simulation model performance, efficiency, accuracy, and stability, as well as identify and resolve any errors, faults, or failures through testing and data analysis
  • Create test cases and scripts to validate features in unit test, Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) test, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test environments
  • Assist in the execution of BMS software verification test plans and test automation; execute SIL and HIL system tests under various conditions and scenarios— simulate the normal and abnormal operation modes of the battery
  • Support simulation test infrastructure for BMS verification as a mission-critical system

What You Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience with Battery Management System controls development
  • Basic understanding of BMS principles, algorithms, and functionalities
  • Knowledge of battery physics-based model development processes
  • Experience with model based development using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience developing models of physical systems based on requirements
  • Proven experience in controls software/model integration testing—ideally in automotive, aerospace, or other safety‑critical industries
  • Experience developing real-time software/models for a Hardware-in-the-Loop electronic control unit simulator
  • Experience building and developing software for a COTS HIL platform (e.g., NI, dSPACE)
  • Proficiency in scripting (e.g., Python) for test automation and data analysis
  • Experience with requirement management and test management tools (e.g., Polarion, Jira)
  • Excellent organizational skills, clear written and verbal communication, and a collaborative mindset
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with high voltage battery systems
  • Experience with new product development in regulated industries (e.g., aviation, medical devices)
  • Experience with DO-178C software verification and ARP4754 development process
  • Experience with dSPACE, Vector CAN tools
  • Familiarity with or a passion for aviation

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
