Job summary

Deseret Cattle & Citrus is seeking Cowboys to join our local ranch team. The Cowboy will support day-to-day livestock operations under supervision, handling routine tasks related to animal care, land management, and ranch maintenance.

You will assist with feeding, watering, and monitoring herd health, while following established procedures and receiving guidance from the Unit Manager and senior cowboys. This role emphasizes teamwork and safety in outdoor work.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of hands-on cattle care or livestock operations.
  • Basic understanding of cattle nutrition, health, and development phases.
  • Effective communication and ability to work independently or in a team.

Deseret Cattle & Citrus is now hiring Cowboys to join our local ranch team!

Summary:

The Cowboy is responsible for supporting day-to-day livestock operations under direct supervision. This position performs routine tasks related to animal care, land management, and ranch maintenance. The Cowboy follows established procedures and receives guidance from the Unit Manager and more experienced cowboys.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in daily cattle care including feeding, watering, and monitoring herd health.
  • Ensure consistent access to clean water, maintain pasture fencing, and manage forage and supplementation to meet nutritional and performance goals.
  • Observe livestock for signs of injury, illness, or stress and report concerns promptly.
  • Support cattle handling activities such as rotating, gathering, sorting, branding, and shipping.
  • Support basic pasture and land maintenance (fence repair, water checks, equipment upkeep).
  • Maintain a safe working environment by following all safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately and timely under supervision.
  • Assist other team members as needed to meet operational goals.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in animal science, agriculture, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of hands-on experience in cattle care, herd management, or livestock operations.
  • Basic understanding of cattle nutrition, health, and development phases.
  • Capable of performing essential animal husbandry procedures, including castration, euthanasia, vaccination, dehorning, ear tagging, ear notching, branding, and blood sampling.
  • Ability to operate basic farm equipment and perform routine maintenance.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Be able to see and hear well enough to monitor livestock condition, identify signs of illness or distress, and respond to safety warnings and environmental hazards.
  • Assist with and/or perform routine animal husbandry procedures, following established protocols and training, which may include vaccinations, ear tagging, branding, dehorning, castration, blood sampling, and euthanasia.

  • Work is performed in outdoor environments with regular exposure to varying weather conditions, seasonal changes, and fluctuating temperatures, as well as work during different times of day and night.

  • Regular exposure to dust, animal dander, manure, and other agricultural environmental elements.

  • Work schedules may vary based on operational needs and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
