Job description

The Court Bailiff is a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to the Conyers Municipal Court, responsible for carrying out limited enforcement duties as authorized by the Municipal Court Judge and the Chief of Police. The Bailiff is responsible for maintaining security and decorum in the courtroom, ensuring the safety of all court personnel, defendants, and the public, and providing general law enforcement services in and around court premises. The Bailiff enforces all courtroom rules and procedures, conducts prisoner transport and supervision, and assists with the execution of court orders and warrants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintains order and security during all court sessions, including criminal, traffic, and ordinance hearings.
• Screens individuals entering the courtroom to ensure no weapons or contraband are brought into the facility.
• Escorts judges, witnesses, and defendants in and out of the courtroom safely and securely.
• Supervises and monitors individuals in custody; transports detainees to and from court and jail facilities as needed.
• Executes and serves court-related documents including warrants, subpoenas, and summonses.
• Coordinates with court staff and prosecutors regarding courtroom procedures and scheduling.
• Administers oaths to witnesses as required by the Municipal Court Judge.
• Responds to emergencies or incidents occurring in the courtroom or within the courthouse.
• Provides testimony in court as required.
• Maintains accurate documentation related to transport, security incidents, or arrests made during court operations.
• Conducts security checks of courtroom and holding areas prior to and after proceedings.
• Completes a documented courtroom security survey as required by policy and CALEA.
• Provides customer service and general assistance to court visitors, defendants, attorneys, and staff.
• Performs Enforces the rules of the court and other duties as assigned by the Municipal Court Judge, Court Services Director, and the Chief of Police.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Georgia POST-certified peace officer in good standing.
• Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement experience preferred, with preference given to experience in court or custodial settings.
• Valid Georgia Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving history.
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
• Must meet physical and psychological standards set by the Conyers Police Department and POST.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of courtroom procedures and judicial security protocols.
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and exercise sound judgment under stressful conditions.
• Skilled in verbal de-escalation and effective communication.
• Knowledge of arrest procedures, prisoner transport protocols, and defensive tactics.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse population including judges, attorneys, defendants, and the public.
• Proficient in report writing and maintaining accurate records.
• Familiar with local, state, and federal laws as they apply to law enforcement duties.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.
• Ability to walk, run, climb stairs, and restrain or escort individuals as necessary.
• Must be able to wear body armor and duty gear, including a firearm.
• Must pass an annual physical fitness assessment as required by department policy.

Working Conditions

• Primarily indoor work in the Conyers Municipal Courtroom.
• Occasional exposure to confrontational or combative individuals.
• May be required to work irregular hours, including evenings and special court sessions.

Certification and Training Requirements

• Maintain annual firearms qualification and use of force certifications.
• Complete annual in-service training required by POST and CALEA.
• Participate in courtroom security and detainee transport training.
