Job summary

Middlebury College seeks a Course Designer - Language Assessment to develop a seven-module online course for world language teachers from elementary through higher education. The project will be delivered asynchronously in Fall 2026 and uses varying multimedia, readings, and limited discussions to demonstrate essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

The ideal candidate holds a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics, plus experience in online course design, teacher education, and deep ACTFL

Qualifications

  • Must have doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics or closely related field.
  • Experience teaching courses in teacher education programs is required.
  • Experience designing and delivering online asynchronous courses is required.
  • Knowledge of Canvas LMS and tools to facilitate online engagement is essential.
  • Deep working knowledge of ACTFL Proficiency Skills and Can‑Do statements at different proficiency levels is expected.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL World Language Readiness Standards is required.

Responsibilities

  • Design a 7-module online asynchronous Language Assessment course to be delivered over 7 weeks in Fall 2026.
  • Contextualize content for teachers of languages other than English across diverse contexts.
  • Create modules with introductory videos, video/audio lectures, readings, multimedia, and limited discussion forums.
  • Coordinate final in-language reader engagement for the course assessment.

Job description

Course Designer - Language Assessment (CF1956)

In Summer and Fall 2026, combine materials from the Online Classroom Research & Assessment Course and the previous 15-week MIIS Assessment course into a course for world language teachers in a range of contexts, from elementary school through higher education, focused on languages other than English.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design a 7-module online asynchronous course called Language Assessment to be delivered over a 7-week period in Fall B 2026.
  • All content should be contextualized for teachers of languages other than English, and apply to a range of contexts.
  • Each module should include an introductory video to each module, video lectures, audio lectures, links to pre‑made readings, videos and podcasts, no more than 2 discussion forums per module, and design activities which demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions addressed in the module.
  • For the final assessment in the course, in‑language readers may be engaged to comment on student designs.
Requirements
  • Have a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics or a closely related field
  • Have experience teaching courses in teacher education programs
  • Have experience successfully designing and delivering online asynchronous courses
  • Knowledge of Canvas as a learning management platform , and technical tools to facilitate engagement in an online synchronous course
  • Deep working knowledge of the ACTFL Proficiency Skill and the Can‑Do statements associated with the different skills at different proficiency levels
  • Familiarity with the ACTFL World Language Readiness Standards
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

Must be able to work at a computer, either standing or sitting, and access the content of written documents, audio files, and videos.
