Job description

Face-to-face position to teach first- and second-year Chinese courses with the potential to teach third- and fourth-year Chinese courses. We are looking for an adjunct to join our World Languages team to teach one or more sections a semester. The new instructor will be supported by our World Languages Coordinator. Our language courses are flipped, communicative, and active-learning-based. Cultural competence is necessary (e.g., how to navigate racial and sexual diversity in the target culture, including gender-neutral language). Candidates need to be available to teach physically in the classroom on our Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Specific days and times are negotiable. Instructors are required to serve for a minimum of one hour a week at the Center for Languages as part of their teaching load.

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

Pooled positions re-open every year.

This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

In accordance with SLCC policy, adjunct positions are offered on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.

Official transcripts are required for those who are offered employment within in 30 days of hire.

  • Become familiar with and abide by all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
  • Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
  • Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
  • Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
  • Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
  • Inform students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.

You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment.

You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

  • M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature, linguistics, or culture), or a related language degree.
  • Native or near-native level of fluency in the target language.
  • Native or near-native level of fluency in English.
  • Experience or interest in teaching either online or livestream modes in addition to face-to-face.
  • Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
  • M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature, culture, or linguistics) or a related language degree.
  • Native level of fluency in the target language, or a ranking of Advanced-Mid or higher as scored by an official Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
  • Knowledge of decolonial studies and gender-neutral language.
  • Two or more years of experience teaching beginning and intermediate language at the college level.
  • Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
  • Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience in computer-assisted learning, and online language instructional methodologies.
