Job summary

Middlebury College seeks a qualified scholar to design an asynchronous online course, Language Teaching with Technology and AI, for Spring 2027. The course will run over seven weeks and include seven modules, contextualized for diverse language education settings from K-12 to higher education.

The candidate should have a doctoral degree, experience in online course design, and familiarity with Canvas. Knowledge of Vermont practices for diverse learners is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree or closely related field required.
  • Experience teaching secondary-age students and teacher education courses.
  • Experience designing and delivering online asynchronous courses.
  • Knowledge of Canvas and tools to facilitate online engagement.
  • Familiarity with Vermont practices for accommodating diverse learners.

Responsibilities

  • Designs a 7-module online asynchronous course titled Language Teaching with Technology and AI for Spring 2027, delivered over 7 weeks.
  • Ensures content is contextualized for a range of teaching contexts from K-12 to higher education and self-employed teaching.
  • Focuses AI use on tools Middlebury students have access to, such as Gemini and CoPilot.
  • Coordinates with the Associate Dean of Curriculum regarding funding options for student access to additional tools.
  • Balances theoretical frameworks with practical training on applicable tools and platforms.

Pay:

The total compensation for delivering this course is $5000.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Designs a 7-module online asynchronous course calledLanguage Teaching with Technology and AIdesigned to be delivered over a 7-week period inSpring2027.All content should be contextualized fora range of teaching contexts, from dual language K-8 schools through higher education contexts as well as self-employed or entrepreneurial teaching contexts.
  • The course shouldbe applicableto students in Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic for this first iteration, but should be something that alumni from Middlebury MA programs in other languages could alsobenefitfrom
  • AI applications should focus on ones that Middlebury students have institutional access to – Gemini and CoPilot.
  • If a subscription to other services or technologies is needed for the courses (corpora, other AI tools) contact Associate Dean of Curriculum for funding options for student access to these technologies
  • Courseshould strike a balance of frameworks for thinking about anynew technology, and training on tools or platforms that can beimmediatelyapplied.
Qualifications:
  • Have a doctoral degreeinApplied Linguistics,Education, Curriculum and Instructionor a closely related field
  • Preferably have experienceteaching secondary-age studentsandteaching courses in teacher education programs
  • Have experience successfully designing and deliveringonline asynchronous courses
  • Knowledge of Canvas as a learning management platform, and technical tools tofacilitateengagement in an online synchronous course
  • Knowledge of and/or readiness and ability toacquireknowledge of Vermont’s practices and policies related to accommodating learners with differentand specialized learning needs
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
  • Must be able towork at a computer, either standing or sitting, and access the content of written documents, audio files, and videos.
